1) Stanford Commute Club now offers up to $300 per year

Be part of the Commute Club’s 10 Year Celebration

Stanford Commute Club is celebrating 10 years (2002 - 2012). As part of the celebration, we are announcing an increase in Commute Club Clean Air Cash and Carpool Credit from $282 per year to $300 per year!

We invite you to join the nearly 8,000 faculty, staff, and students who are Stanford Commute Club members. Consider alternative transportation for greater savings and a healthier, happier commute. Visit our commute planning page to request a transit and/or bike commute plan or visit our ridematching page to find Stanford affiliates with whom to carpool or vanpool.

Contact the Commute Club, and we'll be glad to explore whether sustainable transportation could work for you.

2) Commute Club members received fall quarter payments in December

Try the new My Commute Club feature to check your membership status

If you were a Commute Club member enrolled in the Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit program between September and November 2011, your Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit payment should have appeared as a payroll or bank deposit on or around these dates in December 2011:

If you were in the Commute Club during the fall quarter, the deposit should be $70.50 for the full quarter or $23.50 for each month you were a member during the quarter.

Not sure whether you are a Commute Club member? You now have a way to check online at any time and at your convenience. Visit the new My Commute Club web page, where you may log in and see whether you are currently enrolled in the Commute Club either as a member of our Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit program.

If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu. If you are not in the Commute Club and want to receive Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit, find out if you are eligible to join and also learn more about the Commute Club. Visit our website to request a transit and/or bicycle commute plan from your front door to Stanford.

3) Want to reach 10,000 steps a day? Alternative transportation can help you succeed

These steps could help with your New Year’s resolution for weight loss, fitness, and savings

Do you find that your New Year's resolutions of losing weight, increasing exercise, and living a healthier or more frugal life are difficult to sustain beyond Feb. 1?

Don't be discouraged. You can succeed where others fail by incorporating exercise as part of your commute. As you do, you also could save on commute and parking costs and you could be eligible for up to $300 per year in Clean Air Cash or Carpool Credit by joining the Commute Club.

Dana Forks, administrative associate, Stanford Prevention Research Center, noticed that when she commutes on the Dumbarton Express bus she increases her exercise from the start of her day.

"I recently compared how many steps I record on my pedometer taking public transportation versus driving my car," Forks writes. "Wow! What a difference! When I drive, I take about 200 steps, while with public transportation, I take 1,400 steps by the time I get to work. I now take public transportation three times per week. I also find that I am saving on gas and reducing the stress of finding parking or sitting in traffic."

Whether taking the bus or train, walking or biking, a sustainable commute can be an efficient and effective way to increase exercise in your day and reach your savings goals. To get started, request a transit or bike commute plan, or find a Stanford affiliate with whom to carpool or vanpool.

For more information or assistance trying an alternative commute, call 650.723.9362 or send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

4) Zipcar is offering $40 in driving credit and $36 overnight rates

Need a car? Borrow a Zipcar or Enterprise Rent-A-Car at Stanford and save

Zipcar members report an average savings of more than $500 per month (that's $6,000 a year) compared to car ownership. Whether you are car free full time, part-time or just thinking about going car free, consider these Zipcar and Enterprise Rent-A-Car offers to help you save, while still giving you access to a car when you need one:

Zipcar at Stanford and Enterprise Rent-A-Car on campus are available to Stanford faculty, staff, and Stanford students ages 18 and older. Whenever possible, all Stanford affiliates are encouraged to avoid departing campus during the peak commute times, which include departures from campus between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

5) Request a Clipper card for free for a limited time, and use pre-tax payroll deduction if eligible

Clipper is the fare card that works on most Bay Area transit systems

Currently, there is no charge to get an adult Clipper card, the all-in-one regional transit card that can load multiple passes, ride books, or tickets, as well as up to $300 in cash value for participating transit systems. The $5 fee for a Clipper card is being waived with the addition of either $5 in cash value or a transit pass or ride book. The offer is available for a limited time and is subject to change without notice.

Clipper can be used on Muni, BART, AC Transit, VTA, SamTrans, Caltrain and Golden Gate Transit and Ferry. Eligible Stanford employees may enroll in Stanford's pre-tax payroll deduction program to load their Clipper card with cash and/or the following passes and tickets:

Visit the Clipper website to order a Clipper Card online. Alternatively, attend a card sign up event or request one in person at the locations listed on the Clipper website. If you have questions or need assistance, please send email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the campus being faced with costly mitigation measures.
