2) Zipcar is offering $80 in free driving to members who refer a friend by June 30

Car sharing at Stanford is convenient with 46 Zipcars available at 18 Stanford locations

Stanford has more than 5,000 Zipcar members, and we still have room to grow. For a limited time, Zipcar members who refer a friend to Zipcar will earn $80 in free driving to share with a new member who joins by June 30.

Zipcar at Stanford is a self-service, on-demand car sharing program for faculty, staff, and Stanford students 18 years and older. Stanford affiliates join Zipcar for $25 and receive $35 in driving credit upon joining. Stanford Commute Club members receive up to $96 a year in additional driving credit. Stanford departments can set up a free department membership.

Zipcars can be accessed 24/7 and rates start at $7 per hour, which includes gas and insurance. Zipcar members have access to 9,000 Zipcars worldwide. While you may know that there are Zipcars in San Francisco and the East Bay, you may not realize that Zipcar now has locations on the Peninsula and in the South Bay, including Redwood City, Atherton, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Santa Clara, and San Jose. Visit www.zipcar.com/sf/find-cars to find Zipcars in your area.

Join Zipcar today! If you have questions, please send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

3) Dumbarton Express begins its new service to the Stanford Oval on July 2

Eligible employees ride Dumbarton Express for free with a VTA Eco Pass

Dumbarton Express is coming to the Stanford campus beginning July 2, with a new stop at the Stanford Oval. Eligible Stanford University and Stanford Hospital & Clinics employees may ride Dumbarton Express for free with a VTA Eco Pass.

With the restructuring of the Dumbarton Express, Line DB will travel from the Union City BART station and the Ardenwood Park & Ride lot to the Stanford Oval, making it a good alternative to AC Transit's Line U. It also serves local stops in Menlo Park and Union City and includes a stop at the Palo Alto Transit Center. The restructured Line DB1 route will operate between the Union City BART station and Deer Creek Road, serving Stanford Research Park and the Palo Alto VA Hospital.

All Dumbarton Express buses will be equipped with new Wi-Fi equipment. For more information on the Dumbarton Express service expansion, visit the following links:

For assistance trying a transit and/or bike commute, visit our self-service or custom commute planning assistance pages. For questions, send an email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

4) Anticipate construction-related impacts around campus this summer

Consult Stanford resources for updates and to help identify your transportation options

Summer is a time when construction and renovation activities ramp up around campus. This summer, anticipate even more construction-related impacts to traffic, parking, transit, and biking around campus and the Medical Center.

Areas that are scheduled for construction, some as soon as June 18, include the following:

Consult the following resources for updates and assistance:

Please observe and follow all posted signs. Motorists, please watch for and share the road with bicyclists. Cyclists who choose not to share the road with motorists and instead use sidewalks must walk their bicycles. For bicycle and bike safety information, visit bike.stanford.edu or send an email to bike-information@stanford.edu.

For construction-related transportation questions, please send email to parkingoperations@stanford.edu or transportation@stanford.edu.

5) Postdoc wins a bike in this year's Bike Safety Pledge drawing

More than 210 bicyclists participated in Stanford's Bike Safety Pledge

Congratulations to Michelle Lynne Badura on winning Stanford's Bike Safety Pledge prize drawing! She is a postdoctoral fellow in the School of Medicine, Division of Hematology. She is among 212 Stanford bicyclists who pledged to wear a bike helmet for every ride, even short trips, and to follow the rules of the road while riding during National Bike Month.

"I signed the pledge because to me wearing a helmet on every ride is a no-brainer. I heard that most car accidents happen within five miles from your home, so I figured the same thing likely applies to bikes, that accidents can happen any time, even on short rides," Badura said. "To get to work, I bike to the train station in Mountain View, take Caltrain to Palo Alto, and then bike to my lab. I find that riding my bike to work feels much safer and is more enjoyable than biking in New York, where I used to live, but I still always wear a helmet!"

For more bike safety information and to take the Bike Safety Pledge, visit bike.stanford.edu. For bike questions and information, send an email to bike-information@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the university being faced with costly mitigation measures.
