1) Marguerite holiday schedule and closure of Dumbarton Bridge over Memorial Day weekend

Consult 511 for bridge closure updates and alternate routes

Due to seismic retrofitting, the Dumbarton Bridge is scheduled to be closed to all motor vehicle, pedestrian, and bicycle traffic from 10 p.m., Friday, May 25, through 5 a.m., Tuesday, May 29. The closure may be delayed to another weekend depending on weather. Visit the 511.org website for bridge closure information and the Dumbarton Bridge website for updates.

During the closure, motorists and bicyclists are encouraged to take public transit or alternative driving or bicycle routes. Motorists should allow extra time for travel and use other bridges or routes, including Route 237, the San Mateo Bridge, or the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The San Mateo Bridge and the Bay Bridge are not open to bicyclists or pedestrians.

During the Memorial Day weekend, Stanford's Marguerite shuttle will operate on its holiday schedule. The Line MC, Line V, and Line RP shuttles will operate on their regular schedules during the holiday. The Medical Center Holiday (MCH) line also will run on Memorial Day, taking passengers between the Palo Alto Transit Center and Medical Center. At the Palo Alto Transit Center, Line MCH stops at University Circle, near the southbound Caltrain tracks.

Please note that Line MC-Limited, Shopping Express, and all other Marguerite shuttle routes do not operate during university holidays. Alternatives to Marguerite shuttle service include Zipcar car sharing at Stanford, bicycling, and ride sharing. Enterprise Rent-A-Car on campus will be closed on May 27 and May 28.  Please note that the Parking & Transportation Services office will be closed on Memorial Day.

On Memorial Day, May 28, AC Transit, BART, Caltrain, Muni, and VTA will operate on their Sunday schedules. The ACE train, AC Transit Line U express bus, and Dumbarton Express will not operate on Memorial Day.

If you have questions regarding the Marguerite shuttle service, send an email to marguerite@stanford.edu. For alternative trip planning or other assistance, send email to commuteclub@stanford.edu or call our office at 650.723.9362.

2) More than 1,200 Stanford bicyclists participate in Bike to Work Day

Riders report riding an average of 10 miles per trip and eliminating 2,330 vehicle miles

For more than 10 years, Stanford has participated in the annual Bike to Work Day event, encouraging commuters to pedal their way to work. This year, Stanford hosted nine energizer stations, where a total of 1,240 bike commuters were counted, an increase of 10 percent from 2011 when 1,117 riders were recorded.

Bike commuters reported riding from as far as San Francisco and Fremont. There were 227 Stanford commuters who reported the mileage of their bike commutes, logging a total of 2,330 miles and averaging 10.3 miles per trip. The vehicle miles avoided resulted in the elimination of 2,213* pounds of CO2 emissions on Bike to Work Day.

Stanford's Bicycle Program continues to offer classes and promotions through May, which is national Bike Month. Bicyclists are encouraged to take Stanford's Bike Safety Pledge through May 31 to be entered into a drawing to win a Fuji Crosstown 4.0 bike. By taking the pledge, riders commit to follow the rules of the road and wear a bicycle helmet for every ride, even short trips. On May 30, attend a free bike safety class and receive a voucher to purchase a $40 bike helmet for $10 from the Campus Bike Shop. Pre-registration is required on the Stanford Department of Public Safety website.

For bike questions and assistance, please send email to bike-information@stanford.edu.

* The per-mile emissions factor used for automobiles is 0.431 kg CO2/mile (or 0.950 lb CO2/mile). This is based upon an average passenger vehicle fuel economy of 20.4 mpg (2006 figure from U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics).

3) New Dumbarton Express route between the East Bay and Stanford will start on July 2

The service will offer new Wi-Fi on all buses and increased service frequency

Starting July 2, AC Transit will expand and restructure the Dumbarton Express East Bay service on Lines DB and DB1. The new Line DB will offer service directly to the Stanford campus with a new stop at the Oval. The expanded Line DB and Line DB1, serving Stanford Research Park, also will operate more frequent service. Eligible university and hospital employees may ride Dumbarton Express for free with a VTA Eco Pass.

A proposal to expand the Dumbarton Express service was approved on April 25 by the AC Transit Board of Directors. Schedule details are not available at this time; however, expected service frequency during commute hours is approximately every 30 minutes for Line DB and every 20 minutes for Line DB1.

For more information on the Dumbarton Express service expansion, view the news article on the AC Transit website. For assistance trying a transit and/or bike commute, visit our self-service or custom commute planning assistance pages, or send email to commuteclub@stanford.edu.

1 It is important for Parking & Transportation Services to communicate parking and alternative-transportation information to the campus. Under the 2000 General Use Permit (campus growth plan approved by Santa Clara County), the campus has a goal of "no net new peak-hour commute trips" over the life of the permit and must accommodate campus growth with a limited number of new parking spaces. Failure to achieve this goal will result in the campus being faced with costly mitigation measures.
