Summer Resident Computer Consultant

POSITION: Summer Resident Computer Consultant (RCC)
HOURS: Part-time; 8 hours/week (average)

Resident Computer Consultants (RCCs) educate residents on all aspects of computing at Stanford, consult with residents on computer related problems, and support residential network connections and residence computer clusters. Most importantly, RCCs are expected to be available to residents. RCCs work primarily with the residence staff, Networking Systems, and the Residential Computing central support staff to accomplish their goals.

Responsibilities

The general job description (e.g., Network Administrator, Computer Educator, etc.) of the Summer RCC is the same as academic year RCCs.  However Summer RCCs have additional responsibilties and expectations unique to the Summer quarter.  You should review these additions carefully prior to applying for the Summer RCC position.

Additional Expectations for All Undergrad Summer RCCs

  • All residence staff members must abide by and support the Fundamental Standard, Behavioral Agreement, Honor Code, Alcohol/Substance Abuse Policy, the Stanford Residence Agreement, and all other University and Summer Session policies. All residence staff members have significant responsibility for educating visiting students on these policies.

  •  All residence staff members are REQUIRED to attend all-day Staff Training scheduled June 17-20, 2014 and participate in Welcome Weekend on June 21-22, 2014. Failure to attend training will lead to dismissal and loss of housing and board. Training will last all day and may extend into the evening as deemed necessary, so RCCs should not make other plans for that week.

  • RCCs must successfully complete a LiveScan background check and sign off on a statement acknowledging that they are mandated reporters per California law.

     

Additional Expectations for RCCs working with University Students (Summer Session, Interim RCC)

Summer Session has slightly different rules and responsibilities than during the other three academic quarters. Please be aware of the following special guidelines:   

    • All Summer Session residence staff members are not allowed to consume, possess, or be under the influence of alcohol within their own residence (for example, if you are staffing in Manzanita, you are not permitted to drink in Manzanita). If you are returning to your room while under the influence, you are expected to refrain from interacting with students in any social or official capacity. Summer staff carry a responsibility to serve as role models representing Stanford University and Summer Session. Failure to abide by this policy will result in immediate termination of employment and loss of housing and dining privileges.

    • Staff members who are under the age of 21 are expected to abide by state and federal laws and not consume alcohol. No staff member should use illicit substances. Use of alcohol if under 21 or use of illicit substances is grounds for immediate termination of employment and loss of housing and dining privileges.

    • RCCs may have overnight guests in their residences, as described within the standard Residence Agreement. This policy permits guests to stay for a maximum of 3 nights. RCCs are responsible for their guest’s behavior while visiting, and may not have unaccompanied guests in the residence (e.g., a sibling or friend visiting in one’s house while the RCC is not present). Only one guest is allowed at any given time.

 

Additional Expectations for RCCs working with High School Students (Summer College, Stanford Pre-Collegiate Institutes)

  • Summer Quarter has different rules and responsibilities than during the other three academic quarters. In particular, there are stricter guidelines around drinking in the residences. No Summer College residential staff members may consume, possess or be under the influence of alcohol anywhere in or near the residences of Pre-Collegiate Studies (i.e., Summer College and Pre-Collegiate Institutes). Failure to abide by this policy will result in immediate termination of employment and suspension of housing and dining privileges.
  • Staff members who are under the age of 21 are expected to abide by state and federal laws and not consume alcohol. No staff member should use illicit substances, whether illegal drugs, misuse of prescription drugs, or other substances intended to cause impairment- or intoxication-like effects. Use of alcohol if under 21 or use of illicit substances is grounds for immediate termination and loss of housing and dining privileges. If you are on-call, you may not be under the influence of alcohol.
  • RCCs may have guests in the Summer College residences before 1am, but may not have overnight guests at their residences. Guests must be accompanied at all times in the residence.  Violations of these policies are grounds for immediate termination and loss of housing and dining privileges.
  • RCCs are required to attend some staff meetings as determined by the Assistant Director of Collegiate Programs and complete a program evaluation at the end of Summer Session.

  • RCCs are REQUIRED to attend some all-day staff training sessions, as determined by the Assistant Director of Collegiate Programs, scheduled June 16-20, 2014 and participate in Welcome Weekend on June 21-22, 2014. Failure to attend training will lead to dismissal and loss of housing and board. Training will last all day and often extends into the evening hours, so please do not make other plans for that week.

 

Requirements

 

•  The Summer RCC position is only available to current and former RCCs.

•  Candidates must be in good academic standing. Candidates who are on probation or provisional registration may not be considered for a Summer Session RCC position.

•  Staff will live in the residence or community to which they are assigned, for the length of the term/program. In houses where board is required, the RCC must purchase at least the minimum board plan.

•  Successful applicants must possess strong written and verbal communication skills, and should display a willingness to learn and apply new knowledge and techniques.

•  Summer RCCs should have familiarity with Windows and Macintosh Operation System applications.

•  Summer RCCs should have familiarity with computing resources on campus as well as internet resources such as email and the web.

 

Preferred Traits

 

  • Experience helping and teaching others.
  • Experience organizing projects and working on a team.
  • Demonstrated interest in contributing to life in the residences.
  • Experience consulting, teaching or tutoring especially formally in a university environment within the last academic year.
  • Relevant business or work experience.
