Treasure Market's Golden Jubilee

Art and Antique Sale
March 30 – April 1, 2007

STANFORD, CA — The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University announces plans for the 2007 Treasure Market, a grand celebration of a 50-year tradition. Treasure Market resells donated objects of antiques, collectible books, crystal, china, silver, linens, furs, jewelry, furniture, and art from around the world. This year’s “Golden Jubilee” Treasure Market begins with an opening night sale and catered celebration on Friday, March 30, 2007. Admission to the sale is free on Saturday and Sunday, March 31 and April 1.

In 1957, the Committee for Art — now the Cantor Arts Center’s Membership — began work on the first sale to benefit the Museum, which was named “The Hidden Treasures Auction.” Five of these auctions took place from 1958 to 1966 and raised altogether $39,904. Museum collection needs, however, motivated the Committee for Art to develop a more exciting and effective fund-raising project that resulted in Treasure Market 1968, a spectacular, three-day sale of high quality items of art, antiques, and collectibles.

“The 1968 Treasure Market was such a success that volunteers vowed to keep it going, expanding and improving it,” said Susan Dennis, who is serving her third term as Treasure Market co-chair. “They had such a good time that they returned year after year to help organize and tag the thousands of items donated year-round. It has been a labor of love. This year we have set a goal of $300,000, to bring the grand total raised over the decades to $3.5 million.”

Treasure Market proceeds go to the Art Acquisition Fund, which has allowed Cantor Arts Center curators to purchase more than 1600 objects for the museum’s collections. Volunteers are proud of Treasure Market’s legacy. With the Center’s free admission and community outreach, these works can be enjoyed by everyone.

“These 50 years have been extraordinary,” said Joan Hong, event co-chair who also serves on the Cantor Arts Center’s Membership Board of Governors. “Items donated for sale have ranged from 100 pieces from Mrs. Stanford’s collection of Cypriot pottery (500 B.C.) to the antique carved stone fireplace (imported originally from England by Herbert Hoover to be used in his new home on the Stanford campus) to a wooden sleigh bed slept in by President Jimmy Carter. Our Golden Jubilee will be the grandest Treasure Market yet!”

Treasure Market kicks off with the Friday, March 30, 2007, opening party (ticket required), a catered affair from 6:30 to 9:30 pm, with wine and hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction featuring fine are, vintage wine, golf at Stanford an a new LExus sports sedan! Saturday, March 31 schowcases a benefit drawing for a Tresure Chest brimming with items worth over $3,000!

Tickets are $50 for Cantor Arts Center members and $75 for non-members. The sale is open free to all on Saturday, March 31, 10 am – 4 pm, and Sunday, April 1, 10 am – 2 pm. Treasure Market, both the opening party and sale, is being held at the Arrillaga Center for Sports and Recreation on the Stanford campus at Galvez Street at Campus Drive East. There is free parking in the large lot across the street.
