Evaluation of uterine fibroids in preparation for UFE (Uterine Fibroid Embolization) treatment of a 52 year old female. The 3D volume rendered models (shown below) produced by one of our technologists clearly demonstrate the uterus (rendered in orange) and fibroids (rendered in blue). Producing these images requires advanced software and our lab’s skilled technologists. These images will be utilized by a radiologist who will perform the image-guided UFE.

The UFE is a minimally invasive technique using a form of real time x-ray called fluoroscopy to guide the delivery of embolic agents to the uterus and fibroids. These agents block blood flow to the fibroids in the uterus and cause them to shrink. UFE is a possible option in place of invasive surgery. If left untreated fibroid tumors of the uterus can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pain and pressure on the bladder and bowel. Nearly 90 percent of women who undergo UFE experience substantial or complete resolution of their fibroid related symptoms.
