Tim Duane
Tim Duane, '82, MS '83, PhD '89, is a professor of environmental studies at UC-Santa Cruz and an attorney with more than three decades of professional experience in the fields of energy, climate, land use, natural resources, water, and environmental policy, planning and law. He began working in the renewable energy industry in 1979 and published his first reports discussing climate change in 1990. He is a leading expert on “greening the grid” and the regulatory permitting challenges of renewable energy development as well as issues of public land and resource management throughout the western United States. His book Shaping the Sierra: Nature, Culture, and Conflict in the Changing West explores how private land development in rapidly-growing rural regions threatens a wide range of environmental values as well as how planning and policy can be adopted to reduce the social conflict over such growth.
The first lecture Tim Duane attended as a freshman at Stanford was by Gil Masters on climate change—and, by the following summer, he was working in the nascent solar energy industry to try to do something about it. He has been studying and working to resolve complex energy, environmental and resource management problems now for 35 years since that first lecture.
His research covers three broad areas: (1) climate change law and policy, emphasizing the development of renewable energy technologies; (2) public land and natural resources law and policy; and (3) land use law and political conflict in rapidly-growing regions. He has advised the U.S. Forest Service, National Park Service, and Bureau of Land Management as well as the California Secretary for Natural Resources, Energy Commission, Public Utilities Commission, and Legislature and has done research on public lands management in the west. Internationally, Professor Duane has advised the U.S. Agency for International Development and the Governments of Japan, Pakistan, and Indonesia on water and power systems planning, environment policy and management and conducted research on Vietnamese environmental policy and regulation.
Tim has travelled to over 40 countries and has led trips for Stanford Travel/Study to India as well as Cal Adventures trips to Patagonia, the Amazon, the polar bears of Hudson’s Bay, Machu Picchu, and the Galapagos Islands.
