What Happens When Your Employment Status Changes

Terminate Stanford Employment

If you terminate Stanford employment, you may be eligible for COBRA coverage. To learn more, see COBRA in the Medical & Life section. If you are terminating because of a layoff, watch our presentation about your layoff benefits. We also have brochures about when your employment ends.

Complete One Year At Stanford

Reaching your one-year anniversary at Stanford is an important milestone in your career and to your benefits package. As a regular benefits-eligible employee after one year, you are eligible for the Stanford Contributory Retirement Plan (SCRP) and automatically begin receiving a basic contribution of 1% from Stanford. If you elect to contribute to the SCRP plan, Stanford will match your contribution, up to 5%, when you contribute just 4% of your income. For more information, visit the Retirement section.

Turning 65

If you are still an active employee when you turn 65, you may enroll in Medicare although your medical coverage through Stanford does not change. When you have a claim, your Stanford coverage will pay first, and then Medicare will pay after. As an employee, if you do not wish to enroll in Medicare now, you can wait until you retire, or when your employment ends.

If you cover a Registered Domestic Partner or same-sex spouse who is turning age 65, your partner or same-sex spouse must enroll in Medicare.

If you are an official retiree when you turn age 65 and enrolled in medical coverage through Stanford, you will need to enroll in Medicare, and then call Stanford Benefits to change to a Medicare plan and complete the appropriate forms.

Retirement

As an official retiree, you can enroll in medical and dental coverage through Stanford. You must call Stanford Benefits as soon as you select a retirement date so we can calculate Stanford's contribution toward your retiree health care coverage.
