Iris Q. Tan

Fellow
Stanford Biodesign Program
Stanford, CA

Trained as a Mechanical Engineer at the National University of Singapore but with a deep passion for the medical industry, Iris decided to pursue a career in the development and innovation of medical devices.

Prior to joining the Singapore-Stanford BioDesign Program, Iris was with a Singapore-based medical device start-up which designs intracranial stents. She played an integral role managing the human clinical trials in the clinical product development phase, a critical step in obtaining CE approvals. Her clinical and regulatory experience is in Class IIb and III devices in Europe and Latin America. Iris also helped to improve business processes and products through feedback gathering and competitor research. Through her efforts, Iris? team successfully obtained CE mark for a supplementary device.

Iris was also previously involved in a healthcare software start-up in Philadelphia, whose product replaces the role of clearing-houses. She was thus exposed to the healthcare system and reimbursement process in the USA. In addition, she interned with the Technology Transfer Office of the NUS, where she learnt about patents and invention disclosures.

She believes that this fellowship program will not only give her valuable training in medical device innovation, but provide opportunities for her to meet potential mentors. Her ultimate aim is a desire to help establish a holistic medical device ecosystem in Singapore.

Outside of work, Iris enjoys sports. She also has a passion for travelling to explore new places and cultures. She loves nature and hopes to one day explore Alaska and Peru.
