Membership

Founded in 1905, Cap and Gown is an organization of junior and senior women and alumnae, which honors and brings together Stanford women in service to the community. The thousands of members of Cap and Gown connect across the generations and around the world and form the oldest, continuous student group on campus.

Membership comes in three forms:

  • Actives are undergraduate students in their junior or senior year who join Cap and Gown through an application process. They meet throughout the year to foster community among student leaders.
  • Alumnae further foster community for women leaders at Stanford and beyond through several events and support the Actives through mentorship programs. Actives automatically become Cap and Gown alumnae upon graduation.
  • Honoraries are recognized as strong contributors to the Cap and Gown community, the Stanford community, and the community at large. Each year the Actives can select women to join as honoraries.
