    Abstract

A simulation is developed to investigate the kinetics of nitric oxide (NO) formation in premixed methane/air combustion stabilized by nanosecond-pulsed discharges. The simulation consists of two connected parts. The first part calculates the kinetics within the discharge while considering both plasma/combustion reactions and species diffusion, advection and thermal conduction to the surrounding flow. The second part calculates the kinetics of the overall flow after mixing the discharge flow with the surrounding flow to account for the effect that the discharge has on the overall kinetics. The simulation reveals that the discharge produces a significant amount of atomic oxygen (O) as a result of the high discharge temperature and dissociative quenching of excited state nitrogen by molecular oxygen. This atomic oxygen subsequently produces hydroxyl (OH) radicals. The fractions of these O and OH then undergo Zel'dovich reactions and are found to contribute to as much as 73% of the total NO that is produced. The post-discharge simulation shows that the NO survives within the flow once produced.

  • Successive laser ablation ignition of premixed methane/air mixtures OPTICS EXPRESS Bak, M. S., Cappelli, M. A. 2015; 23 (11): A419-A427

    Abstract

Laser ablation has been used to study successive ignition in premixed methane/air mixtures under conditions in which the flow speed leads to flame blow-out. A range of laser pulse frequencies is experimentally mimicked by varying the time interval between two closely spaced laser pulses. Emission intensities from the laser ablation kernels are measured to qualitatively estimate laser energy coupling, and flame CH* chemiluminescence is recorded in a time-resolved manner to capture the flame evolution and propagation. A comparison of the measurements is made between the two successive breakdown ignition events. It is found that the formation of the subsequent ablation kernel is almost independent of the previous one, however, for the successive breakdowns, the first breakdown and its ensuing combustion created temporal regions of no energy coupling as they heat the gas and lower the density. Flame imaging shows that the second ablation event successfully produces another flame kernel and is capable of holding the flame-base even at pulse intervals where the second laser pulse cannot form a breakdown. This study demonstrates that successive ablation ignition can allow for the use of higher laser frequencies and enhanced flame stabilization than successive breakdown ignition.

    Abstract

A fast rise-rate, variable mass-bit gas puff valve based on the diamagnetic repulsion principle was designed, built, and experimentally characterized. The ability to hold the pressure rise-rate nearly constant while varying the total overall mass bit was achieved via a movable mechanical restrictor that is accessible while the valve is assembled and pressurized. The rise-rates and mass-bits were measured via piezoelectric pressure transducers for plenum pressures between 10 and 40 psig and restrictor positions of 0.02-1.33 cm from the bottom of the linear restrictor travel. The mass-bits were found to vary linearly with the restrictor position at a given plenum pressure, while rise-rates varied linearly with plenum pressure but exhibited low variation over the range of possible restrictor positions. The ability to change the operating regime of a pulsed coaxial plasma deflagration accelerator by means of altering the valve parameters is demonstrated.

  • Time-synchronized continuous wave laser-induced fluorescence on an oscillatory xenon discharge REVIEW OF SCIENTIFIC INSTRUMENTS MacDonald, N. A., Cappelli, M. A., Hargus, W. A. 2012; 83 (11)

    Abstract

A novel approach to time-synchronizing laser-induced fluorescence measurements to an oscillating current in a 60 Hz xenon discharge lamp using a continuous wave laser is presented. A sample-hold circuit is implemented to separate out signals at different phases along a current cycle, and is followed by a lock-in amplifier to pull out the resulting time-synchronized fluorescence trace from the large background signal. The time evolution of lower state population is derived from the changes in intensity of the fluorescence excitation line shape resulting from laser-induced fluorescence measurements of the 6s(')[1/2](1)(0)-6p(')[3/2](2) xenon atomic transition at ? = 834.68 nm. Results show that the lower state population oscillates at twice the frequency of the discharge current, 120 Hz.

  • Structure of laboratory ball lightning PHYSICAL REVIEW E Ito, T., Tamura, T., Cappelli, M. A., Hamaguchi, S. 2009; 80 (6)

    Abstract

Trajectories of self-sustained laboratory ball lightning, generated by arc discharges with silicon, are investigated for understanding the possibility of buoyant flight. Extremely low apparent densities are found, nearly approaching that of standard air. The freely buoyant balls are observed to survive for about 0.1 s, with significantly buoyant balls surviving for several seconds. These ball lightning objects are found to have a density and size that can easily allow them to be carried by a gentle breeze of a few meters per second. The results are interpreted by a model that is an extension of that first proposed by Abrahamson and Dinniss [J. Abrahamson and J. Dinniss, Nature (London) 403, 519 (2000)]. The buoyant behavior of ball lightning seen in our experiments is believed to arise as a result of the formation of a nanoparticle oxide network growing from a molten silicon core.

    Abstract

A diagnostic is developed for the nonintrusive study of the azimuthal drift current in the coaxial ExB discharge of a Hall plasma accelerator. The technique of fast current interruption is used to generate a signal on several loop antenna that circle the outer wall of the discharge channel. The signal on the antenna is recorded, and used to determine the spatial distribution of the azimuthal drift at the moment of current interruption. The results of the experiment are compared to estimates derived via prior intrusive measurements, and the intrusive estimates are found to predict the spatial characteristics of the azimuthal drift, but underestimate its total magnitude. The self-induced magnetic field is then calculated and added to the applied magnetic field. The peak total magnetic field is seen to shift 2-5mm towards the anode due to self-induction, and suffer a reduction in magnitude of 10%-15%. The peak in the total magnetic field is then found to more closely coincide with the peak of the measured electric field than the peak of the vacuum magnetic field. It is concluded that the self-induced magnetic field could be important to anomalous electron mobility in the Hall-effect thruster, and simulation efforts should try to include its impact.

  • Ion energy distribution and gas heating in the cathode fall of a direct-current microdischarge PHYSICAL REVIEW E Ito, T., Cappelli, M. A. 2006; 73 (4)

    Abstract

This paper reports on measurements of the ion energy distribution (IED) at the cathode of an argon dc microdischarge using energy-resolved molecular beam mass spectrometry. The measurements are conducted at a fixed pressure-electrode separation product (pd) of 1 cm Torr with a maximum discharge pressure of 20 Torr. The measured IED is compared to the theory of Davis and Vanderslice [W. D. Davis and T. A. Vanderslice, Phys. Rev. 131, 219 (1963)]. A higher pressure in a case of almost constant normalized current densities by pressure (Jp(-2) = 0.080+/-0.006 mA/cm(-2) Torr(-2)) yields a lower ratio of the ion mean free path to the sheath thickness. The results in almost constant Jp(-2) case then indicate that a scaling law of Jp(-2) is no longer applicable for IED of microdischarge. Expected background gaseous temperatures from IEDs with the collisional Child law have reasonable increasing with increased current density (J) in both cases of almost constant Jp(-2) and a constant pressure of 10 Torr. Supported by temperature measurement by laser absorption spectroscopy, it is demonstrated that the expanded theory might be applicable also to microdischarges (Ar approximately 20 Torr) with temperature adjusting.

    Abstract

Coaxial Hall discharges (also known as Hall thrusters, stationary plasma thrusters, and closed-drift accelerators) are cross-field plasma sources under development for space propulsion applications. The importance of the electron-wall interaction to the Hall discharge operation is studied the through analysis of experimental data and simulation of the electron energy distribution function (EEDF) inside the discharge channel. Experimental time-average plasma property data from a laboratory Hall discharge are used to calculate the electron conductivity and to estimate the rate of wall-loss collisions. The electron Boltzmann equation is then solved in the local field limit, using the experimental results as inputs. The equation takes into account ionization and wall collisions, including secondary electrons produced at the wall. Local electron balances are used to calculate the sheath potential at the insulator walls. Results show an EEDF depleted at high energy due to electron loss to the walls. The calculated EEDFs agree well with experimental electron temperature data when the experimentally determined effective collision frequency is used for electron momentum transport. The electron wall-loss and wall-return frequencies are extremely low compared to those predicted by a Maxwellian of equal average energy. The very low frequency of wall collisions suggests that secondary electrons do not contribute to cross-field transport. This conclusion holds despite significant experimental uncertainty.

    Abstract

A comprehensive analysis of measurements supporting the presence of anomalous cross-field electron mobility in Hall plasma accelerators is presented. Nonintrusive laser-induced fluorescence measurements of neutral xenon and ionized xenon velocities, and various electrostatic probe diagnostic measurements are used to locally determine the effective electron Hall parameter inside the accelerator channel. These values are then compared to the classical (collision-driven) Hall parameters expected for a quiescent magnetized plasma. The results indicate that in the vicinity of the anode, where there are fewer plasma instabilities, the electron-transport mechanism is likely elastic collisions with the background neutral xenon. However, we find that in the vicinity of the discharge channel exit, where the magnetic field is the strongest and where there are intense fluctuations in the plasma properties, the inferred Hall parameter departs from the classical value, and is close to the Bohm value of (omega(ce)tau)(eff) approximately 16. These results are used to support a simple model for the Hall parameter that is based on the scalar addition of the electron collision frequencies (elastic collision induced plus fluctuation induced), as proposed by Boeuf and Garrigues [J. Appl. Phys. 84, 3541 (1998)]. The results also draw attention to the possible role of fluctuations in enhancing electron transport in regions where the electrons are highly magnetized.

    Abstract

Laser-induced fluorescence of the Balmer-alpha (H(alpha)) transition of atomic hydrogen was performed within the nozzle of a 1-kW class radiatively cooled arcjet thruster operating on hydrogen and synthesized-hydrazine propellants. Axial velocities were determined from the Doppler shift of the H(alpha) line center relative to a stationary reference, whereas translational temperatures and electron number densities were determined from a line-shape analysis of the H(alpha) transition. The results are compared with a numerical model and indicate excellent agreement with the velocities, as well as temperatures near the nozzle exit. There are discrepancies, however, in the temperatures far upstream of the exit and in the electron densities, suggesting needed improvements in the modeling of the recombination chemistry.

    Abstract

Laser-induced fluorescence of the H(?) transition of atomic hydrogen has previously been performed in the plume of a hydrogen arcjet thruster. Measurements of plasma velocity and temperature, based on the Doppler shift and broadening of the H(?) line shape, were previously published [Appl. Opt. 32, 6117 (1993)]. In that paper the Stark broadening of the H(?) transition was estimated from static-ion calculations performed in the early 1970's and found to be negligible in comparison with the Doppler broadening. However, more recent dynamic-ion calculations have shown the Stark broadening to be considerably larger than was previously assumed, resulting in inaccurate temperature measurements. We present a reanalysis of the fluorescence data, taking into account the improved Stark broadening calculations. The correct atomic hydrogen translation temperature and electron number density are obtained from the Doppler and Stark broadening components of the measured line shape. The results indicate a substantial drop in temperature from those previously reported.

    Abstract

A diagnostic has been developed to measure velocity and translational temperature in the plume of a 1-kW-class arcjet thruster operating on hydrogen. Laser-induced fluorescence with a narrow-band cw laser is used to probe the Balmer ? transition of excited atomic hydrogen. The velocity is determined from the Doppler shift of the fluorescence excitation spectrum, whereas the temperature is inferred from the lineshape. Analysis shows that although Doppler broadening is the only significant broadening mechanism, the fine structure of the transition must be taken into account. Near the exit plane, axial velocities vary from 4 to 14 km/s, radial velocities vary from 0 to 4 km/s, and swirl velocities are shown to be relatively small. Temperatures from 1000 to 5000 K indicate high dissociation fractions.

    Abstract

The first free electron density radial profiles of a sodium plasma created by laser resonance saturation are reported. The measurements were based on Stark broadening, of the 4(2)D-3(2)P multiplet and reveal the formation of a conically shaped plasma along the path of the laser pulse, which can be attributed to strong absorption of the laser pulse along the ionization path.
