Join us for a book discussion group in the Round Room following our
10:00 am University Public Worship. We will be discussing Unbelievable:
Why We Believe and Why We Don't by Oxford theologian Graham Ward. In
this fascinating and page-turning book, Ward explores the psychological,
biological, and cultural nature of belief systems and the meaning they
attach to our lives. He identifies the ability to develop and sustain these
systems as the distinguishing feature of human evolution, and argues
that modern secularism is itself a belief system. Our discussion will be
facilitated by Anne Hill. We will be covering Chapters 5, 6, and 7 (pp. 103- 157), discussing the author’s thoughts and theses on the topic: What Makes a Belief Believable?

Anne Hill is a supervising attorney at the Legal Aid Society of San Francisco.
She taught business writing at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and
currently teaches courses in both journalism and and poverty law at the University
of California, Berkeley. She received her Postgraduate Diploma in theology from
the University of Oxford.
