Personal bio
I am a long-time faculty member in Ophthalmology (Medical School)and Human Biology (undergraduate Arts & Sciences). My medical interests and research are in retinal physiology and disease, but I also explore how vision is relevant to an understanding of art and other cultural endeavors. Knowledge is not divided into right and left brains: the worlds of history, art, literature, and science are all one, to understand and enjoy. My Hum Bio teaching has sought to reveal the scientific wonders of the eye (as the input of human vision), and then investigate vision in art, literature, sports, whatever. We digress into the eyes of animals too: very revealing (and humbling) with respect to our own powers. I've written 3 books now about vision and art, along with a lot of medical stuff, so this cultural interest is no longer casual. At a personal level, my wife and daughter are physicians--but my son is a film-maker. I enjoy sports and music (classical clarinetist)...and of course art.
