Fogarty Global Health Equity Scholars Fellowship

The Stanford Center for Innovation in Global Health (CIGH) is pleased to announce its participation in the Global Health Equity Scholars (GHES) Consortium, together with the University of California–Berkeley, Florida International University, and Yale University. The GHES Fellowship program has been funded by the Fogarty International Center at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).  The GHES Consortium has assembled mentors, partnered with international research sites, and identified research opportunities focused on training ~40 researchers over the five year grant period to address new and emerging challenges in health in the slum areas of urban and rural low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) throughout the world.

The GHES Fellowship is designed predominantly for U.S. postdoctoral and clinical fellows to support an 11-month in-country mentored research fellowship at participating GHES international LMIC research sites. A limited number of awards may be made to doctoral students (PhD, DrPH, etc.), professional students (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.), and foreign scholars from affiliated LMIC sites. The main objective of the program is to generate a new and cadre of global health researchers, educators, and professionals who will be prepared to address the new challenges in global health that arise from our constantly changing planet, in particular, those challenges that emerge from the world's burgeoning human settlements known as slums that have developed in urban and rural communities of many low and middle-income countries. Factors associated with chronic, non-communicable, as well as infectious diseases, environmental health hazards, risks specific to women and children, intentional and unintentional injuries, and mental disorders are potential areas of research that will be supported under this program.

The GHES consortium offers training opportunities at 20 affiliated international sites across 16 countries. GHES fellows can choose to work at any of the 20 sites, not just those sponsored by their home institution.

Eligibility

This year, we welcome applications from post-docs with an appointment at institutions outside of the GHES consortium. These applicants cannot directly apply. They need to get approval from the program manager Maria Hernandez to apply. Any outside candidate applying without approval will not be considered. Please read the information to provide when contacting Maria.

This fellowship is open to: 

• U.S.-based post-doctoral fellows (PhD, MD, or DVM). Post-doctoral applicants do not necessarily need to be affiliated with one of the four GHES institutions prior to applying; post-docs who are offered a new position by at least one program-affiliated faculty mentor (at UC Berkeley, FIU, Stanford or Yale) are welcome to apply and are eligible to receive the fellowship in the first year to go abroad. The fellow’s mentor or institution should also plan to provide at least one year additional support after the fellow returns from abroad;
• PhD candidates enrolled in health-related doctoral programs, supported by a mentor (PI) at one of the four consortium institutions, who have passed their qualifying examination and whose dissertation project can be conducted at one of the program’s field sites abroad. 
• Professional students (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.) who have completed 3 years of professional school and who have a mentor (PI) at one of the 4 consortium institutions.
• Foreign scholars from participating international sites who have completed their doctoral studies, professional studies (MD, DDS, DVM, PharmD, etc.) or are currently on a post-doctoral fellowship.

Other eligibility criteria

• A US-based applicant must be a citizen of the United States or its territories or possessions, or persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence. Resident aliens must include their green card number in their application.
• Foreign scholars must be citizens of any nation exclusive of high-income countries as defined by the World Bank.
• All applicants must have demonstrated interest in, and statement of commitment to, a career in global health research.
• All applicants must have the support of a participating U.S.GHES campus and/or an affiliated GHES international site.
• For US-based post-doctoral applicants, preference is given to those who have received support from their institution’s NIH T32 or other research training grants, or from their institution’s research-oriented global health residency and fellowship training programs.
