Objectives and Goals
Community Health is one of the eight Scholarly Concentration Foundations. The Community Health curriculum empowers future physicians to improve the health of diverse communities and reduce health inequities through innovative scholarship and direct community engagement. Students learn the means to effect change through reflective service-learning, rigorous community-responsive scholarship, advocacy, and civic leadership.
Requirements
Students who pursue Community Health in conjunction with an application, from Immunology to International Health, are required to complete 6 units, including:
- PEDS 250: The Social and Environmental Determinants of Health (3 units)
And one of the following:
- PEDS 202C: Qualitative Research Methods and Study Design (3 units)
- MED 247: Methods in Community Assessment, Evaluation and Research (3 units)
- HRP 258: Introduction to Probability and Statistics for Clinical Research (3 units)
- Other methods course that student feels is most applicable to their project–must discuss with Foundation Director for approval
For students interested in completing all 12 units required by the Scholarly Concentration program in Community Health, additional courses can be selected based upon specific interests and preferences. Students also may chose to build on their course work in the pursuit of a Master’s degree in Public Health, as a joint degree program between Stanford and the University of California, Berkley.
