Stanford Medicine Interactive Learning Initiatives

A new era in medical education

The Flexner Report, published over 100 years ago, transformed medical education. Today we are at the tipping point of another major transformation. A number of factors -- including a greater understanding of how people learn -- are focusing this shift on the pedagogy of interactive learning. Based on the Socratic method, this pedagogy employs both online and classroom strategies to reinvigorate the learning process for faculty and students.

Innovation at Stanford School of Medicine

The School of Medicine is exploring a range of interactive learning strategies with the aim of developing best-practice support for faculty who want to evolve their classes. Our efforts are building on the results of early pilots that have demonstrated benefits in a number of courses. Interested educators are encouraged to contact the school’s EdTech group, which offers expertise in the course design and implementation process.
