Small Animal Imaging Facility
Stanford Center for Innovation in In-Vivo Imaging (SCI3)
The mission of the Stanford Center for Innovation in In-Vivo Imaging (SCI3) is the application and advancement of technologies for in-vivo biological assessment and imaging in animal models. The instrumentation will support the development of reagents and approaches that will reveal in-vivo changes at the molecular and cellular level such that a greater understanding can be gained in animal models.
In this manner the power of repeated measures can be applied to these models enriching the data sets and improving the statistics. This core will provide a test bed for evaluating human imaging reagents and strategies.
The flexibility and rapid analyses of the animal models will greatly accelerate the development of these molecular imaging strategies as well as novel therapeutic strategies for a variety of diseases. The Clark Building houses the SCI3 core resources and instrumentation.
The Small Animal Imaging Core Facility is partially supported by funds from the Stanford Digestive Disease Core, the Stanford Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Stanford ICMIC, and is operated by the Departments of Pediatrics (Neonatology) and Radiology.
SCI3 Directors
-
Christopher H. Contag, Ph.D.
Dr. Contag is a Professor, Departments of Pediatrics and of Microbiology and Immunology and, by courtesy, of Radiology, and directs the SCI3. - Sanjiv Sam Gambhir, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Gambhir is a Professor in Radiology and Bioengineering and co-directs the SCI3. - Craig Levin, Ph.D.
Dr. Levin is a Professor of Radiology and co-directs the SCI3. - Michael Moseley, Ph.D.
Dr. Moseley is a Professor in Radiology and is the Director of Experimental MRI and MRS at the Lucas MR Center. He directs the MR imaging and spectroscopy aspects of the SCI3. - Tim Doyle, Ph.D.
Dr. Doyle is Scientific Director of the Small Animal Imaging Facility, and oversees its day-to-day running, providing training and assistance with the instruments.
SCI3 Research Staff
Dr. Doyle provides training on the IVIS Imaging Systems (both bioluminescence and fluorescence imaging), MicroCT scanners, MicroSPECT scanners, and the Vevo Ultrasound, and provides regular training sessions on these systems. He can also show users how to use the Leica (Mauna Kea) Cellvizio microscope, cryomicrotome and cryomacrotome systems.
Dr Pisani manages the 7T MRI system, providing training and assistance for all users on this system - please coordinate directly with her to arrange for this. She also provides training on the use of radionuclides in the imaging facility, as well as training on the MicroPET systems. Finally, Dr Pisani provides training on the ART Optix and CRI Maestro fluorescence imaging systems.
Dr Habte provides image quantification assistance to all users of the imaging facility. He runs regular software training classes focusing on different software applications used within the facility, as well as providing assistance with specific problems as required.
Upcoming Hands-on Instrument Training
IVIS Basic BLI Training
Tim Doyle, Ph.D. [tim_doyle] will be conducting training that will cover the basics of working with animals in all of the imaging centers (Clark, SIM1 and CMP) as well as an overview of the service center. Main training covers the use of the IVIS systems to acquire simple bioluminescent images and how to quantify them. Training starts at 11am, and lasts approx 2 hours. Please let Tim [tim_doyle] know if you are interested in attending.
