Manager of Interpretation

The Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University seeks a highly collaborative, experienced educator to craft dynamic and engaging interpretive strategies and programs for its exhibitions and permanent collection galleries. Reporting to the Associate Director for Academic and Public Engagement, the Manager of Interpretive Programs will think broadly about collections interpretation, the role of public tours, K-12 tours, and exhibitions programming, exploring ways to offer new and diverse perspectives on art for our visitors. The MIP will provide leadership for the museum’s large and growing corps of docents, while working closely with the Cantor’s curatorial staff, the Education Programs Associate, the Family Programs Coordinator, the Student Engagement Coordinator, and the Curator for Collections Engagement. As an educator in a research and teaching museum at a major University, this position will interact collaboratively with students and faculty in addition to communities beyond the campus.

Position Title: Art++ Visual Media Specialist

Under the direction of the Curatorial Assistant for the Art++ Initiative, the Visual Media Specialist will assist with the creation of digital media for Art++, an Augmented Reality (AR) application for use in the Cantor’s galleries. Art++ is an exciting project that has brought together museum professionals, graduate engineering students, and professional designers to create an enhanced museum experience at Stanford. The student in this position can expect to work 7-9 hours a week creating pixel-perfect, tailored visuals for items in the Cantor’s collection. He/she will be expected to attend a 1-hour team meeting every week, and to submit biweekly progress reports. Students applying to this position should be highly proficient with raster graphics editors such as Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketch, or Pixelmator. The ideal candidate would also have some digital animation experience. Must be detail oriented, self-motivated, and able to work on an individual basis. The length of the position is for the entirety of the academic year, with possible extension into summer.

Position Title: Collections Student Assistant

Under the direction of the Assistant Curator, Collections Storage and Research, the Collections Student Assistant will contribute to the care of the museum’s permanent collection in storage. Example projects include: building or padding out basic boxes to house objects, photographing and cataloging works in the collection, researching museum history, and re-arranging storage areas. Up to 50% of the position may also be dedicated to filing and sorting museum documentation. This is an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working behind the scenes with a museum collection. No previous experience is necessary, but preference will be given to students with demonstrated interest in art history, anthropology, or archaeology. Estimated 6 hours per week. Position Title: Exhibitions Assistant

This position reports to the Head of Exhibitions and Curatorial Assistant for Exhibition Projects and provides administrative and some operational support for the implementation of the exhibitions program. This is an opportunity to acquire or augment skills in exhibition coordination and records management, and to gain some behind-the-scenes museum experience working with Cantor Arts Center staff. Responsibilities include the following: organize and manage the museum's exhibition archives (physical and digital); construct full-sized graphics mockups; use InDesign to layout spreads and print labels; assist with various label projects; create maquettes and SketchUp gallery layouts for exhibition planning, help maintain gallery aesthetic standards; and attend certain exhibition meetings. The Exhibitions Assistant may also perform a range of administrative duties including routine correspondence, telephone, and e-mail, faxing, filing and copying, organizing departmental supplies, and other duties as assigned. Museum experience is preferred but not required; attention to detail, excellent organizational and communication skills, self-motivation, interest in arts administration; and experience using the Microsoft Office Suite and the Adobe Creative Suite (specifically, InDesign and Illustrator) is highly desired. Minimum 8 hours per week. This position has the potential to grow into a greater range of responsibilities.

Position Title: Family Sunday Ambassadors

Applications accepted on rolling basis.

The Cantor Arts Center is hiring twelve Family Sunday Ambassadors to work during the highly popular Family Sunday program in the summer. Candidates should be highly motivated, reliable individuals who demonstrate interest in art or museum work, take initiative, exhibit strong communication and interpersonal skills, and enjoy working with families and young children. Ambassadors are expected to work on average two Sundays per month for at least six months; excellent attendance is a must. Hours are 12:15 to 3:30 pm. Studio Assistants work with a professional art educator to present unique studio art-making experiences each week. Responsibilities include explaining the lesson, elements of art, and techniques to families, maintaining art supplies, preparing materials, assisting the art educator as needed, and managing setup and cleanup of the studio.

 

Welcome Table Assistants are the first point of contact for Family Sunday visitors. In addition to informing families about Family Sunday activities, they ensure the smooth flow of visitors. Responsibilities include greeting family visitors, providing families with information about the day's tour and art project, managing tour and art-making sign-ups, tracking metrics, and helping guide families in and out of the art-making studio.

 

Art Pack Assistants manage the organization and distribution of Art Packs, which contain materials for visitors to use independently in the museum. Responsibilities include signing out Art Packs, explaining museum guidelines, maintaining the quality of the materials, circulating throughout the galleries to engage families in thoughtful drawing experiences.

 

Tour Assistants help docents lead tour groups by tracking the time and number of participants, recording notes and comments, managing group dynamics, and helping families move through the galleries. Family Sundays offer four half-hour tours; after the final tour, tour assistants will use their remaining time to assist with studio art-making or art pack duties.
