Excavation suggests why gymnasium crumbled in 1906

University Archaeologist Laura Jones led an excavation at the site of the former Men's Gym, which was demolished in the 1906 earthquake before opening. Had it survived, the Greek-columned building would have been the largest gym in the United States at the time. Why did it fall?

Faculty describe their Environmental Venture Projects

Preventing acute respiratory diseases in Bangladesh, creating biodegradable composite materials for the building industry, reducing the social and environmental impact of Chile's fish-farming industry — these are the crucial interdisciplinary research projects funded by Stanford's Environmental Venture Projects program. Faculty recently described their research at a forum hosted by the Woods Institute for the Environment.

Scientists turn stem cells into precursors for sperm, eggs

Human embryonic stem cells derived from excess IVF embryos may help scientists unlock the mysteries of infertility for other couples struggling to conceive, according to research from School of Medicine researchers, including Renee Reijo Pera. They devised a way to efficiently coax the cells to become human germ cells in the lab.

  • Olmsted Terrace Interest List available today: Eligible faculty and staff are invited to complete the online "Interest List" submission form beginning today at 8 a.m. Olmsted Terrace is the new neighborhood rising on the east side of campus along Stanford Avenue.
  • Correction: Friday's headline and description of the CIRM funding were incorrect. The funding is for three grants — one for acute myeloid leukemia, one for stroke and one for epidermolysis bullosa.
