The Stanford University Board of Trustees has elected alumnus Jeffrey Raikes to serve a five-year term. Raikes, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, will begin his term June 1.

Raikes earned a bachelor's degree in engineering-economic systems from Stanford in 1980. He has served on the School of Engineering's Strategic Council and on the Major Gifts Regional Committee of The Stanford Challenge fundraising campaign. He also has been highly involved with the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and the Center on Food Security and the Environment. In addition, he and his wife established the Jeff and Tricia Raikes Undergraduate Scholarship Fund to ensure that students admitted to Stanford from rural and inner-city schools have an opportunity to attend the university.

"Jeff is a dedicated Stanford alum who has been involved in and supportive of many areas of the university," said Leslie Hume, chair of the Stanford Board of Trustees. "With a remarkable career in both the corporate and not-for-profit worlds, he brings to the board a broad global perspective and a deep knowledge of the education sector that will serve the university well. We are very fortunate to welcome Jeff to the board."

Raikes has served as CEO of the Gates Foundation since 2008. He is responsible for setting strategic priorities, monitoring results and facilitating relationships with key partners for the foundation's three program groups: global development, global health, and the U.S. program, which focuses on education.

Early in his career, Raikes worked as a software development manager at Apple Computer. He joined Microsoft Corp in 1981 as a product manager and held several positions during his tenure there, including president of the Microsoft Business Division, group vice president of the Worldwide Sales and Support Group and senior vice president of Microsoft North America.

In addition to their commitment to Stanford, Jeff and Tricia founded the Raikes Foundation and are active members of the United Way of King County, Wash., where they served as co-chairs of the 2006-07 fundraising campaign. Jeff Raikes also serves on the board of directors for Costco Wholesale and the Microsoft Alumni Foundation, where he is chair of the board.

A native Nebraskan, Raikes was part of the initial conceptualization of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's J.D. Edwards Honors Program in Computer Science and Management, which in 2008 was renamed the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management.
