Israeli nuclear security expert Ariel ìEliî Levite will deliver Stanfordís 2009 Drell Lecture at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18, in the Arrillaga Alumni Center at 326 Galvez St. The event is free and open to the public.
Levite, a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, is a member of the Israeli Inter-Ministerial Steering Committee on Arms Control and Regional Security. From 2000 to 2002, he was a visiting fellow at Stanfordís Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC), which sponsors the Drell Lecture.
Leviteís address, ìA Moment of Truth for Nuclear Energy,î will focus on how to decouple the expansion of nuclear energy from nuclear weapons proliferation, how to operate the nuclear power industry safely and securely, and finding long-term solutions for handling nuclear waste.
The Drell Lecture, established in 1994, invites a distinguished expert to address a current and critical national or international security issue that has important scientific or technical dimensions. The lecture is named for physicist Sidney Drell, CISACís founding co-director and former deputy director of the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.
