2013-2014 Minimum Postdoctoral Scholar Salary/Stipend Levels http://postdocs.stanford.edu/admin/blog/archives/2013/05/2013-2014-minim.html Dear Colleagues,

The Vice Provost for Graduate Education Patricia Gumport and Provost John Etchemendy have approved new minimum postdoctoral research scholar salary/stipend levels for 2013-2014, after recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Postdoctoral Affairs chaired by Dr. Merritt Maduke.

The University will continue with a salary/stipend baseline adjustment in the postdoctoral scholars funding scale. The new minimum levels reflect a 1% baseline increase for all years 1-4 (note that postdocs who remain here beyond 4 years have the 4th year level as their applicable minimum). This baseline increase took into account cost of living in the Bay Area for food, transportation, personal items and housing, the extent of fellowships available to scholars who are funded externally, and the shrinking funding sources available to faculty. Recommendations are also compared with NIH guidelines.

Fiscal year 2013-2014 salary information is available online at: http://postdocs.stanford.edu/handbook/salary.html.

Please note that on October 1, 2013, active postdoctoral scholars must receive a step increase so that their total funding for the year is equal to or above the minimum that is appropriate to them based on the years and months of experience on October 1. This means that postdocs who are currently receiving the minimum support will see a higher than 1% in their take home pay starting October 1. Please review your records, determine any necessary adjustments and discuss with your faculty to plan the budgets for FY14. The salary calculator tool (linked below) is there to assist you in this process.

New Report in RM1: Outstanding Postdoc Tuition http://postdocs.stanford.edu/admin/blog/archives/2012/12/new-report-in-r.html To All University Postdoc Administrators:

I would like to announce that a report has been created in ReportMart1: “Outstanding Postdoc Tuition”. The report was designed to be succinct and user-friendly. (Contact Shannon Monahan for a Job Aid with instructions on where to find the report and how to run it.)

From the Research Policy Handbook:
As you recall, a $125 per quarter tuition/registration fee is charged to all actively appointed postdocs. As per the RPH 9.4: “This fee may be charged directly to a grant or contract from which the Scholar is being paid, or to a Fellowship supporting the Scholar. Where neither of these funding sources is available, the fee will be paid by the faculty sponsor/department in which the Scholar is appointed.”

A few notes:
• This report draws its data from the balances on the postdoc’s “student account”. Thus, please keep in mind that, if the postdoc has made a payment to their account which was inadvertently applied to the tuition, they will not be on this report since the tuition balance is zero.
• Along these lines, please make sure that postdocs are Aid Year activated correctly for each and every quarter. Incorrect Aid-Year activations could affect whether or not a tuition payment from GFS is applied appropriately.
• Also, note that by virtue of this report being housed in ReportMart1, this report runs on day-old data.

Questions?
Should you have any questions regarding the report or the information contained within it, and you have researched the issue to the best of your ability, please send in a HelpSU ticket to the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs for assistance. We can triage to the GFS folks if need be.
