A message to the Directors of Graduate Admissions (February 2015)

Dear Faculty Directors of Graduate Admissions,

Thank you for your dedicated leadership and thoughtful work to facilitate the graduate admissions process.

Making prospective students aware of all that’s available once they matriculate may increase your yield. We would like to to alert you to some distinctive central resources that make Stanford even more attractive to the students you are recruiting. In summary, here are things we've recently heard that give Stanford a competitive edge in recruiting new graduate students:

Faculty and Peers
Excellence in research, teaching, training in research

One campus
Community of diverse scholars enhances interdisciplinarity
5,000+  (over 60%) of graduate students live on campus

Central resources to supplement PhD programs
Abundance of outstanding resources for graduate students’ professional & career development
Commitment to advance diversity (e.g., travel funds, GRAD Diversity Day)
Doctoral Fellowships (e.g. SGF, EDGE, CCSRE, SIGF)
Reorganization of Teaching, Learning & Innovation Resources

Bay Area/Silicon Valley mindsets

RECRUITMENT MATERIALS To complement your department or program’s printed recruitment materials, we will send a separate notice to your student services administrators who can request multiple copies of these documents:

1. The Graduate Education Overview outlines support for diversity, interdisciplinary learning and innovation at Stanford, as well as abundant resources for professional development. (download PDF)

2.  The VPGE Brochure (trifold) informs new or current students about our resources and opportunities.

In addition to sharing these documents with prospective students, we also encourage you to point students to the VPGE website.

Please review all the information outlined below, as these details describe some of the reasons and examples of Stanford resources that make us stand out among our peers. Please forward information to your admissions committee and other faculty, as appropriate.

We welcome your feedback and ideas for activities in future years.

Sincerely,

Patricia J. Gumport
