As of January 2015, over 220 laboratories have participated in the ProtectSU program and more than 615 high value instruments have been protected. The best way to mitigate potential damage and loss in an earthquake is to maintain seismic restraints on laboratory equipment.
Lab equipment is often relocated and sometimes the restraint straps and thumblocks are not moved with the equipment. The Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach allows you to purchase seismic restraints and install them on existing lab equipment, as needed .
ProtectSU will reimburse 25% of the cost to install seismic restraints on newly purchased lab equipment.
DO-IT-YOURSELF (DIY) EQUIPMENT PROTECTION:
Stanford has an agreement with Quakehold Industrial, Inc. to provide seismic restraint materials. This agreement and Stanford pricing is good through September 2016.
Quakehold products (universal restraint bars, seismic restraint straps and gel pads) are available through SmartMart and from Fisher-Scientific and Grainger.
A Starter Kit has been developed for Stanford, which includes enough fasteners to secure 24 bench top laboratory items.
Other qualified vendors of seismic restraint products include:
SEISMIC RESTRAINTS ON NEWLY PURCHASED EQUIPMENT:
