Overview

Heyday is an independent, nonprofit publisher and unique cultural institution. We promote widespread awareness and celebration of California’s many cultures, landscapes, and boundary-breaking ideas. Through our well-crafted books, public events, and innovative outreach programs we are building a vibrant community of readers, writers, and thinkers.

Position Description

Interns will select a forthcoming book and work with supervisors to shape and execute a sales and marketing plan for the book. Not only will interns be directly involved in the day-to-day activities of a book publishing house, there will be opportunities for informational interviews with staff in other departments and a chance to attend in-house launch and production meetings as well as outside networking events for the industry.

The intern will have hands-on experience with the marketing, publicity, events, and outreach efforts of one of our key titles during the season. This includes identifying key target markets, crafting pitches, directly communicating with different organizations across California, and setting up events for the author. Possible titles include (but are not limited to):

  • Game Changers: A history of California through the prism of twelve elections that dramatically impacted subsequent generations of Californians and forever changed the direction of the state.
  • Cityscapes 2: Our second collection of SF Chronicle architecture critic John King’s “Cityscapes” columns, exploring San Francisco’s architectural quirks and texture. Themes include Towers, History, Connections, and the Waterfront.
  • Sierra Starlight: Tony Rowell, Galen Rowell’s son, has been widely recognized for his work in astrophotography, specifically his beautiful landscapes illuminated by starlight. This book will showcase his work in the Sierra Nevada and include an essay explaining his process.
  • High Spirits: A guidebook to San Francisco’s “legacy” bars, as deemed by San Francisco Heritage.

The intern will split her time between the marketing, events, and sales departments. More detailed descriptions of the work in these departments are below.

Marketing
The marketing portion of this internship will provide an exciting introduction to the world of publicity and marketing in the publishing industry. Interns will have a hand in assisting the marketing and publicity director and be directly involved with all aspects of the department including research for potential media, writing pitch letters and press releases, helping with mailings and database maintenance, organizing and researching applicable book awards, maintaining our press release, book, and magazine library, and sorting and distributing clippings.

In addition, a large component is to support Heyday’s ongoing efforts to promote the organization, books, and authors through online channels. Interns will be expected to help contribute to and monitor our blog, Facebook page, Twitter account, and e-newsletter.

Events & Outreach
The events and outreach component gives interns an opportunity to explore the publishing industry through the eyes of the author. Authors are experts in their field and can sometimes be the best marketing tool for their books. Tasks include working with authors to research possible event venues (such as historical societies, book stores, libraries, and clubs), writing pitch letters and making phone calls to venues selling the idea of an event, creating catchy event descriptions for our website and Facebook page, and attending events and helping with set-up and book sales.

Sales
The intern will have the opportunity to work with the Sales Director to get to know current accounts, research new accounts, and learn about tip sheets and other sales materials. The intern will get a brief lesson in a publishing sales database and also will be able to attend monthly sales meetings where the Sales & Marketing team analyzes sales data in order to better understand the market for future titles.

Qualifications

These internships are valuable not only for students of communications, business, marketing, mass media studies, journalism, social sciences, and the humanities, but also for anyone interested in developing networks with organizations across California.

Experience is not necessary but interns are expected to be able to work independently, have a desire to learn about publishing, be extremely organiazed, have excellent writing and communications skills, and be familiar with today’s social media platforms.

Compensation

All housing and transportation arrangements will be the responsibility of the intern. A Bill Lane Center stipend will be provided as compensation.
