This a remarkable book that tells the story of the institutional changes in Stanford University's Football program for the last 6-8 years. The story is related in the words of the coaches and players who made these changes. It begins with an overview of the program and really takes off with the hiring of Jim Harbaugh. When he was introduced in the presence of Bill Walsh who was the "mastermind of his recruitment," he announced, "I vow I will attack this endeavor with enthusiasm unknown to mankind." And he did and he surrounded himself with other coaches and players who accepted his system and helped him make cultural changes at the university.
This is a fascinating tale on many levels, it is the story of these players, told in their words; it is an analysis of the personality and character of the new coach; it demonstrates how effective management can change a culture and it is an insight into the relationship of the football team - both coaches and players - to the school administration. Above all it is a story of how a school regained its enthusiasm for the sport and with hard work and effective leadership changed the team focus and work ethic resulting in a movement from a contentious 1 -11 record to a Pacific 12 and Rose Bowl championship. This is a story of excellence and high moral character and it is exciting to see the way it was done.
Despite the fact that I am an alumnus, I feel the story should have a universal appeal because of the intimate and detailed facts and analysis and the quality of the writing.

As an alum, I am thrilled to witness the rise of Stanford football, which finally is asserting its rightful place, alongside dozens of other top-flight sports programs at Stanford, to be on par with the university's academic reputation. The fact that Stanford has won the Directors Cup for now 19 consecutive years always struck me as a bit ironic considering how poorly our football program had fared in those years. We used to say the only place quieter than Stanford Stadium on game day was Green Library. No more!

This book gives excellent insight into the inner workings of the transformation SFB underwent during the Harbaugh era and the transition to the Shaw era. Especially revealing was Tavita's quote that the players at one point realized they had it in them to win but still were lacking the physical tools to attain that goal; the patient, methodical way the coaches developed the players to ultimately achieve that goal is what is well chronicled in this book. The rise of Stanford football was a slow but determined process that took a lot of faith to build; as Harbaugh said, quoting the Bible, faith is a belief in what you don't see and this book does a good job of showing how Harbaugh got players to start buying into something that may have seemed like a quixotic dream.

The writers, all of whom are/were Stanford students, do an excellent job of telling this story; their writing style is easy to read, engaging, well structured, and entertaining. The interviews with past and present coaches and players give insight into some of Harbaugh's eccentricities, e.g., the "what's your deal" game against USC, where Harbaugh decided to go for 2 even though Stanford was pummeling the Trojans.

Wow, thank you Sam, George and Joseph for the amazing work, the time and effort you all put into making this ebook happen. I was a fly on the wall taking in all that you, the players and the coaches had to offer. A few stories had filtered down to the Bootleg but so many were new. Even though we've lived through it as fans of the Cardinal team, readers will still feel the emotional triumphs and defeats with every page

As Fletch said, " It doesn't make sense! It never made sense!" And I add, " But it never felt so good"

Great read, essentially an inside look into the rise of Stanford Football. Authors have some great nuggets about the early years, Coach Harbaugh, Andrew Luck and many other favorites. Brought back some amazing memories and now i'm stoked for 2013-14 season. Must read for any Stanford Football fan, or incoming Freshman or Grad student who needs background on team history. Also, first book I ever read on my iPad using the free Kindle app. Took an extra 2 minutes only, piece of cake. Go Card!

. . . .this is a must read. Well written and researched. If you hate Stanford for some reason, don't buy this. But all Stanford followers, football fans or not, should read this and will enjoy it. About much more than "just" football. This is what college athletics should be. Belongs on your bookshelf, but only after you have read it. Highly recommended. Good job!

This is an extremely fun, well-written romp through the past several years of Stanford football. I have been a huge fan for over 20 years, and found myself embarrassingly emotional as I relived these events with the insider's perspective of Joseph, George, and Sam. I strongly recommend this to any Stanford alum or football fan.

I loved reading this, brought back so many memories since 2007. I thought I had it good at Stanford in the 90s! Love the flow of the words and background on the players, not to mention the emotional edge without it turning into one of those overdone Olympic profiles.
