Today, the Afghan government took a big step in its ongoing efforts to shield children from the adverse effects of armed conflict, with Minister of Defence Tariq Shah Bahrami signing and putting into force a Child Protection Policy. This policy codifies a number of measures to provide for greater protection of children, including to prevent the use of violence against children involving any personnel in the Afghan National Army and its associated civilians and contractors in the Ministry of Defense. GEN John Nicholson told attendees that the RS Mission would continue to lend training, advice and assistance to work with the Afghan military as well as the UN and the international community to see that the child protection policy is fully embedded into the Afghan military’s operations. #ForAFG #AFGStrong

Afghan National Defense and Security Forces and United States Forces-Afghanistan are conducting a series of ongoing attacks to hit the Taliban where they are most vulnerable: their revenue streams. These combined operations strike drug labs and command-and-control nodes in northern Helmand province. Since beginning these strikes on Nov. 19, Afghan and U.S. forces have set the Taliban back approximately $11 million. Here, A KC-10 Extender from the 908th Expeditionary Air Refueling Squadron refuels an F-22 Raptor from the 95th Expeditionary Fighter Squadron in support of the campaign. The F-22 is used principally because of its ability to mitigate civilian casualties and inadvertent damage by employing small diameter bombs during U.S. airstrikes. #ICYMI
