CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

The California Avenue Streetscape Project includes improvements between El Camino Real and the Caltrain Station at Park Avenue. The purpose of this project is to help revitalize the street by providing modern street design and amenities that will support the creation of a vibrant pedestrian- and bike -oriented commercial and residential district that builds upon existing public art amenities.

The City anticipates both daytime and nighttime construction activities to expedite the construction schedule and to minimize business impacts from the project. The City plans to maintain vehicle and pedestrian access to the area at all times during construction. Furthermore, the city has hired a construction firm to provide regular updates to the surrounding community and create a point of contact that will be available to address any concerns.

Construction Look Ahead Schedule for the Week of May 4 thru May 9, 2015

Please join local merchants and city officials at the Plaza to celebrate the completion of the project on Thursday, May 7th, at 2:30pm. Please join us in thanking the businesses and surrounding community and officially celebrating the improved streetscape.

This will be the final weekly update as the majority of the construction will be completed this week and the Contractor will continue work on the finishing touches on the project.  All of the major streetscape work is finished, with the exception of the plaza.  This week, work will focus there to complete remaining fountain concrete work which will include placing new concrete and all of the remaining site furnishings.  Pedestrians and bicyclists will be detoured safely around these areas.

With the significant work along California Avenue completed, the contractor is focused this week on the following minor and punchlist items:

  • Sidewalk patching along California Avenue
  • Completion of new street and parking signs
  • Installation of wheel stops between Ash and Birch
  • Minor irrigation and landscaping work along California Avenue
  • Placement of new site furnishing will continue
  •  Minor electrical work at the meter pedestals will take place at Mimosa Lane

Work affecting vehicular and pedestrian traffic

  • Traffic will be rerouted/detoured around the plaza at times
  • Parking will be restricted on the block around the plaza

Work will generally occur between the hours of 7a.m. and 6 p.m. Although most of the loud work is over, the daily quiet period will continue from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. every day in areas where it might be needed. As a reminder, " quiet time" means no loud construction noise such as, saw cutting, jack hammering, and excavating. The City has asked the Contractor to comply to "quiet time.  We understand the importance of keeping businesses and patrons happy and appreciate everyone's patience during this time.

If you have any questions regarding project construction, please call  Charlie Hayler at (916) 472-9122. Thank you for your continued patience as we near the completion of this project.
