EPA's Regional Activities in the Middle East
By working across a region, EPA can share its experiences with a vast number of people, making work more efficient. Regional forums also allow for the countries to share their experiences with each other, as well as with EPA. Below are some examples of how EPA works regionally in the Middle East and North Africa.

Public Participation in Environmental Decision-making
Public Participation Guide: Engage the public. Preserve the planet.
The international public participation toolkit, which is located on EPA’s website, provides tools for public participation and public outreach in environmental decision-making. It is designed with government agencies in mind to help them plan, design, and implement an effective public participation program. There are several case studies cited from the Middle East. The Guide has been translated into Arabic, French, Spanish, and Chinese.
Regional Networks
Regional environmental enforcement networks promote the rule of law, good environmental governance and sustainable development within a specific region by strengthening capacity to implement and enforce environmental requirements. EPA has helped to build, support and launch regional networks in the Middle East. These include:
- Network for Environmental Compliance in the Maghreb (NECEMA) Exit – launched February 2006
- Arab Roundtable on Sustainable Consumption and Production Exit– launched May 2009
- Arab Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (ANECE) Exit – launched June 2009
The networks provide a means for participating countries to cooperate in the implementation of environmental law and encourage exchange in the field of environmental compliance and enforcement.
Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV)
EPA has worked with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Global Partnership for Clean Fuels and Vehicles (PCFV) to launch the development of a Middle East and North Africa Roadmap for Clean Fuels and Vehicles, with the goal of moving the region to lead-free and lower-sulfur fuel and introducing more fuel efficient and cleaner vehicles.
In support of this goal, UNEP held a Clean Fuels and Vehicles Middle East regional workshop Exit in September 2010 in Cairo, Egypt.
