Superfund Site Profile
The 140-acre Baxter/Union Pacific Tie Treating site is located along the Laramie River in Laramie, Wyoming. The Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) operated the plant for the treatment of railroad ties and other wood preserving operations on an intermittent basis from 1886 to 1983. Historical spills and disposal practices contaminated soil and groundwater with hazardous chemicals. Cleanup is ongoing under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) program, administered by the Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (WDEQ). EPA took the site off the Superfund programs National Priorities List (NPL) in December 1999.
