STANFORD, Calif. – An overtime goal by Jessica Chisholm lifted No. 6 Stanford to a 1-0 victory over Miami (Ohio) Sunday afternoon at the Varsity Turf.
After surviving a late flurry of penalty corners from the Redhawks (3-2) to end regulation, the Cardinal (3-1) secured its third consecutive victory on the first penalty corner of overtime in the 81st minute.
“The team stepped up today and everyone did their role well,” said Stanford sixth-year head coach Tara Danielson. “It’s early in the season so it was great to see a different style of play. It took us some time to adjust but we were patient in the backfield and created opportunities down the sidelines.”
Stanford was dominant from the start, outshooting the Redhawks 20-5 while holding a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners, but Miami (Ohio) stood its ground throughout regulation.
The deadlock was nearly broken in the final ten minutes of regulation, with the Redhawks earning three consecutive penalty corners with the clock winding down. With Jordan Barry serving a five-minute exclusion, Stanford was able to withstand the pressure and send the game to overtime.
Stanford was outshooting Miami (Ohio) 4-0 in overtime until it won the final penalty corner of the game. Sarah Helgeson inserted a pass to Maddie Secco who set up Chisholm’s one-time effort into the bottom right corner with 4:28 remaining in the first overtime period. It is Chisholm’s first goal of the season.
“We had ten corners and lots of opportunities,” said Danielson. “It’s all there for us, we just have to refine our play inside the circle and capitalize on our opportunities in the attacking end.”
Chisholm and Secco led the Cardinal with four shots apiece and Lauren Becker had three. Dulcie Davies had a mostly quiet day in the cage, but her two saves came Stanford needed them most in the closing moments of regulation. Davies earned her second shutout in as many games.
Stanford is back in action Thursday when it travels to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on No. 17 Iowa, followed by matchups against Saint Louis and Kent State on Saturday and Sunday.
