LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Four Cardinal won multiple events for the No. 2 Stanford women's swimming and diving team en route to a 189-118 win over No. 19 UCLA on Friday afternoon at the Spieker Aquatics Center in Los Angeles.
Freshman Ella Eastin, sophomore Janet Hu, sophomore Ally Howe and junior Lia Neal all won twice for Stanford (5-0, 5-0 Pac-12), which was also led by a strong day from the senior class.
"Our seniors were really good today," head coach Greg Meehan said after the meet. "Jaynie (Pulte), Sarah (Haase) and KC (Moss) in particular, really led the group. I'm pleased with the level of effort in our racing and look forward to seeing them get back at it again tomorrow against Southern Cal."
Senior Sarah Haase won the 100-yard breaststroke with a finish of 1:00.95.
Eastin earned her first victory of the day in the 200-yard freestyle at 1:48.42, and then broke the two-minute barrier and bested the field in the 200 individual medley with a finish of 1:59.18.
Hu, who won four events in Stanford's two wins last week, was tops in the 100 back at 52.69 and the 200 back at 1:55.06. Meanwhile, Neal won both of the sprint freestyle events and Howe won both fly events. Neal posted victories in the 50 free (22.28) and the 100 free (49.26), while Howe edged her UCLA counterpart, Katie Grover, by seven-tenths of a second in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:59.02, and out-touched Grover by three-tenths of a second in the 100 fly for a win at 54.54.
Junior Tara Halsted and freshman Leah Stevens completed the sweep in the distance events. Halsted hit the wall at 10:03.31 to win the 1,000 free, while the rookie stopped the clock at 4:55.55 to earn the victory in the 500 free.
Stanford bookended the meet with victories in the 200 medley relay (1:42.18) and 200 freestyle relay (1:30.97).
For a Cause
UCLA hosted a breast cancer awareness meet to raise proceeds for UCLA's women's health center. The Bruins had pink and white caps and the Cardinal wore black and pink caps for the occasion. Ticket and t-shirt sales benefited the health center.
