LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Stanford junior Akash Modi was named to the U.S. Senior National Team following a second-place performance in the all-around at the 2016 Winter Cup Challenge Thursday and Saturday at the Cashman Convention Center.
Modi finished with a combined overall score of 175.300 after posting an 86.850 score on Thursday, which he followed with an 88.450 score on Saturday to finish second overall.
On the weekend, Modi placed 2nd in high bar (29.950), 7th in parallel bars (29.100), 10th on pommel horse (29.250) and rings (29.050) and 18th in floor (28.550) and vault (29.400).
Performances at Winter Cup helped determine the 15 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2016 P&G Gymnastics Championships in Hartford, Conn., June 3-5.
Another bright spot for the Cardinal was freshman Grant Breckenridge's performance to finish 13th in the all-around, putting up a career-best 14.700 on parallel bars, good for fifth overall.
Robert Neff finished just behind Breckenridge with a 15th place finish and a 166.800 overall score, placing fifth overall on high bar. Taylor Seaton rounded out the Cardinal with a 33rd place finish while placing fifth overall in the vault with a 30.300 score.
The Cardinal looks ahead to next weekend where it will host the International Collegiate Challenge as well as senior day on Saturday, Feb. 27. Meet time is set for 4 p.m. at Burnham Pavilion.
