ATLANTA - It was an All-American start to the 2016 NCAA Championships. In the only event of the first day of competition, the Stanford women's swimming and diving team finished sixth in the 800-freestyle relay on Wednesday.

At the aquatics home of the 1996 Summer Olympics, Nicole Stafford, Ella Eastin, Julia Ama and Lindsey Engel combined to break seven minutes in the meet-opening relay. Their time of 6:59.19 placed them fifth in their heat and sixth overall to earn All-America accolades.

"I'm really proud of this group," head coach Greg Meehan said, "especially the performances of Julia Ama and Lindsey Engel. They don't typically swim the 200 freestyle, but they both stepped up for the team in a big way. This is a great start for us and gives us some momentum heading into the rest of the week."

The foursome earned Stanford 26 points on the first day.

The NCAA Championships continue on Thursday. A full Stanford schedule is below. Prelims begin at 7 a.m. PT and finals are slated to start at 3 p.m. PT.
