STANFORD, Calif. – Madison Berggren, Dani Jackovich and Anna Yelizarova all had hat tricks, Julia Hermann made eight saves in the cage and No. 3 Stanford was able to exact a bit of revenge on No. 7 Cal, winning comfortably in Saturday's Big Splash, 13-5.
The last time these two teams met on Feb. 7, Cal (19-7, 1-3 MPSF) came out on top 5-2, a result which snapped the Cardinal's 32-game home winning streak and was Stanford's lowest-scoring output in a single game since 2005. Stanford (18-2, 4-0 MPSF) would have none of that on Saturday, slicing up Cal's defense for 13 goals, including seven in 6-on-5 situations. The Golden Bears had surrendered double-digit goals just once this season, giving up 10 to Hawaii on Jan. 22, and were third in the MPSF with a 5.12 team goals against average.
Stanford scored twice in the game's first two minutes, led 4-0 after one and never trailed in its wire-to-wire victory. Cal was able to close within two at the half, 5-3, but the Cardinal offense found an extra gear in the third quarter, rattling the cage six times.
The Cardinal was a perfect 3-of-3 on the power play in the first quarter, scoring the game's first three in the 6-on-5. Gurpreet Sohi (6:35), Jordan Raney (6:00) and Dani Jackovich (3:41) made those advantages count and Katie Dudley scored her 21st of the season at even strength with 3:25 to go in the opening period.
Madison Berggren tallied Stanford's lone goal of the second quarter, also on the power play (3:16), as Cal had its most fruitful eight-minute stretch, scoring three times.
Coming out of the half is when the Cardinal split the game wide open. Berggren hammered home another 6-on-5 goal at 6:21 and Jackovich added her second of the afternoon at 6:06 to push Stanford's lead to 7-3. Genevieve Weed would score at 3:45 in the period before Stanford reeled off three more unanswered.
Berggren completed her third hat trick of the season (3:24), Anna Yelizarova netted her first of three (1:35), Kat Klass scored in her 16th game this season (1:10) and the Cardinal was up 10-4 late in the third quarter.
Emily Loughlin scored Cal's final goal with 39 seconds left in the period, one possession prior to Yelizarova finishing off another positive 6-on-5 for Stanford. Yelizarova (6:20) and Jackovich (4:16) secured their hat tricks in the fourth and the Cardinal had three players with at least three goals in a game for the sixth time this season.
Stanford, which has now won 43 consecutive regular-season MPSF games, steps out of conference for the final time tomorrow when it hosts No. 18 San Diego State at 1 p.m. Greg Mescall and Chris Dorst have the call on Pac-12 Bay Area.
