The Echo acoustic droplet ejection (ADE) technology has revolutionized liquid handling with its non-contact, high-precision, high-speed capabilities for transferring liquids using acoustic energy (with 2.5 nL and 25 nL dispensing capability). Sound waves eject precisely-sized droplets from the source plate onto the destination plate suspended above.

The technology and the level of automation are pretty significant and quite excellent. It really has been a game changer for how we provide these services.
The ability of the Echo to work with much smaller volumes sizes is also important, and a big help in reducing enzyme costs while stretching the amount of use we get from our DNA parts library.
It’s so easy, with no pipetting required – and for example I’ve seen an undergraduate do a few 1,000 reactions per week. By hand, this would have taken months.
We are now running thousands of assays versus hundreds before.
The infinite flexibility that the instrument is capable of is what brought us to look at it closely.
