    Imagine what opposing forums are doing as NONE of Stanford Daily writers pick Stanford to triumph, with a ranked squad and titles as recent as 2012 + 2013 (!) Oregon lost their Heisman QB (ditto UCLA); USC is drunk on overly generous ratings for speed and size — we do good work in the Coliseum! (review please).

    Do and Michael are calling a 2-loss season, while the others hedge variously for a 3-loss season. Barring another injury loss of Aziz Shittu, the defense should approach last year’s healthy performances. The new secondary may be an upgrade of last year’s crew. Which means that an improved offense–primarily under center–should be a threat to Oregon, more than since Andrew Luck’s tenure (≥30 pts. against the Ducks).

    How many of this honorable sextet really recall how Hogan played against #9 UCLA…or that he outplayed Kessler in the USC game? Coach Shaw has recently been saying things about Kevin Hogan that were once reserved for Andrew Luck–about his command of the playbook. Revisit a video of that UCLA game–and then find a video of an Andrew Luck in a game as a Cardinal. You might be surprised at how Hogan was channeling Andrew Luck. Imagine, Kevin was touted for going 16-19 against the Bruins, yet two of those incompletions were on-target drops by Rector and Cajuste, his top receivers. Imagine, how we’d still be hearing the rants about 18-19. Any Stanford fan who watched that game, should be highly anxious for this season to start.

    My Ouija board is freshly waxed and it’s telling me that if David Shaw gives Kevin Hogan leeway to call more plays–not just check-downs, Kevin may invoke comments that resemble Shaw’s 2011 mentions of how Andrew called better games than the coaches.

    Stanford’s system and its coaching subdue some aspects of exceptional skill and talent. Witness how future NFL HOF Luck couldn’t muster a Heisman Trophy–twice. Witness how Luck was famously dinged–pre-draft–by Phil Sims for lacking an NFL arm. Luck is one of the best athletes to ever be a repeat starter as an NFL QB–better than John Elway.

    Hogan has yet to play this season, but a continuance of his closing performances of last season will provoke closer comparisons than are currently justified. Also, Hogan is one of the better athletes on the current team–ask his teammates who’ve played basketball with him! BTW, Hogan’s play earned a win over USC last year…his teammates gave that game to the Trojans.
