Role of Science at EPA
“Science has been the backbone of the most significant advancements EPA has made in the past four decades and continues to be the engine that drives American prosperity and innovation in the future.” —EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy, Remarks at the National Academy of Sciences
EPA is one of the world’s leading environmental and human health research organizations. Science provides the foundation for Agency policies, actions, and decisions made on behalf of the American people. Our research incorporates science and engineering that meets the highest standards for integrity, peer review, transparency, and ethics.
The process of incorporating high-quality science into Agency decision-making is coordinated by science organizations within the Agency. It is guided by EPA's scientific integrity policies. In addition, the Agency’s stringent scientific peer review processes are designed to ensure that all EPA decisions are founded on credible science and data.
Agency science continues to have far-reaching, and lasting positive impacts:
- Cleaner Air, Longer Lives
EPA’s clean air research has provided the basis for National Ambient Air Quality Standards that have helped increase life expectancies. - Faster, More Efficient Chemical Screening
EPA scientists are ushering in a new paradigm of faster, far less expensive chemical testing and screening tools and techniques. These efforts will provide critical insight into the pathways that link chemical exposure and potential health effects. - Protecting Water Sources
EPA scientists are working with decision makers and local communities across the nation to provide the tools, knowledge, and other solutions they need to protect clean, adequate, and equitable water supplies and resources.
