Safely Use Rodent Bait Products

Rat and mouse poison products, if misused, can potentially harm you, your children, or your pets.  Always read the product label and follow all directions when using pesticides.

Remember!

  • Always store pesticides away from the reach of children and pets, such as in a locked utility cabinet or garden shed.
  • Place traps or baits only in locations where children and pets cannot access them.
  • Never store pesticides next to food, including pet food.
  • Read and follow the instructions on the pesticide label.

Products offer consumers a range of choices of price, weather resistance, and protection to children, pets, and non-target wildlife.

All rat and mouse poison products must have the safety measures listed here to protect children, pets, and non-target wildlife from accidental exposure:

  • The poison must be secured in a protective bait station.
  • The poison must be a block or paste form (pellets are banned).
  • No more than one pound of poison can be sold in consumer use products.
  • Consumer products cannot contain the most toxic rat and mouse poisons: brodifacoum, bromadiolone, difenacoum, and difethialone. Make sure the product you buy does not contain any of these poisons.
