BIODESIGN INNOVATION
(Bioe 374A/B, Med 272A/B, ME 368A/B, OIT 384/385)

OVERVIEW

Biodesign Innovation is a fast-paced project-based course for students with a passion for entrepreneurship and a commitment to improving healthcare through medical technology. Over two quarters, multidisciplinary teams of graduate students identify real-world unmet medical needs, invent new medtech products to address them, and plan for their development into patient care.

The Biodesign program was one of the top academic experiences that I had at Stanford, hands down, across schools and across my undergraduate and graduate studies... an exceptionally thoughtful, thorough, and high-quality curriculum that taught while also inspiring and energizing.
--Colin Cahill, former Biodesign student

This practical, proven process for medtech innovation is instructed and supported by dozens of experienced faculty, staff, and industry experts. Students can expect to receive coaching and guidance from a combination of the following contributors:

  • Core Faculty – Seasoned professors with backgrounds in medicine, engineering, and business and successful track records in inventing and commercializing important medical technologies. They provide a combination of didactic and hands-on learning.
  • Project Coaches – Executives from medtech start-ups who guide the teams on their unique innovation projects.
  • Subject Matter Experts – Specialists from the medtech field who consult with the teams on specific aspects of their plans (e.g., IP, regulation, reimbursement).
  • Corporate and Venture Investors – Medtech funders who help the teams evaluate and improve the commercial potential of their projects at the end of each quarter.

It was just amazing the amount of support and resources provided through the Biodesign class. It’s more than just a class, it’s like joining a network…or being a part of something much bigger.
--Ian Shakil, former Biodesign student

After taking Biodesign Innovation, students routinely apply their new skills to found start-up companies, launch medtech careers, and invest/consult in the life sciences field.
