Garrett is Co-Founder and CEO of Nasseo, Inc., a dental medical device company named to the 2012 World's Best Technology (WBT) Showcase. Garrett received a PhD in Bioengineering from UC San Diego and a BS in Agriculture and Biosystems Engineering from the University of Arizona. Dr. Smith's technical expertise is in medical device development, nanomaterial surface modification, and in evaluating the tissue response for dental, orthopedic, and spinal devices. Garrett trained for one year at Lund University in Sweden as a Whitaker International Fellow. Upon returning to the US, Garrett interned with the R&D Biologics Group at Nuvasive, a spinal device company. His research has been published in top scientific journals and featured in MedGadget, The Street, and FOX news. Garrett has 10 pending or issued patents, several of which are being commercialized.

Garrett received formal business training at Stanford University as a Biodesign Innovation Fellow. He has consulted in product development for Moximed Inc., an orthopedics device start-up, and as a grant writing consultant for Freedom Meditech Inc., a diabetes device start-up. Previously, Garrett worked for the UCSD Technology Transfer Office where he gained expertise in invention disclosure, technology/market evaluation, and licensing strategy.

Garrett has co-founded three medtech ventures which have won world-renowned business plan competitions (Stanford, UCSD, Venture Cup Denmark, London Business School) and successfully received grant and investor funding (NCIIA, US ARMY).

In his free time, Garrett enjoys experiencing new cultures, going on adventures such as backpacking, scuba diving, and music festivals, and making friends around the world.
