Todd E. Murphy , MS

Fellow
Manufacturing
Stanford Biodesign Program
Stanford, CA

Cottrell/Specialty Fellow
Todd studied mechanical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Johns Hopkins University. His work has focused on two areas of interest, medical technology development and poverty alleviation. His graduate research on surgical skill evaluation led him to the medical device industry, where he worked first on several catheter products and later designed instruments for Intuitive Surgical's robotic surgical system, the da Vinci. He then transitioned to work with Proximity Designs, a social enterprise in Myanmar, where he led improvements in the manufacturing operations for innovative, low-cost small farm irrigation equipment. Todd describes himself as a product development engineer to emphasize his preference for pure design but firm belief that design itself is useless without proper application. He sees a vast need for novel medical technologies in emerging markets.
