Hira Thapliyal , PhD

Born in India, Thapliyal received his higher education in the United States, earning a B.S. in electrical engineering from Washington State University, followed by an M.S. in electrical engineering from the University of Idaho and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Cornell University.

Thapliyal gained experience in the medical device field while working for Vascular Interventions, maker of atherectomy systems. In 1986 he co-founded Cardiovascular Imaging Systems, Inc., a company that developed catheters for the ultrasonic intraluminal imaging of human arteries. Three years later he became CEO of MicroBionics, Inc. Thapliyal founded a new company in April 1993 called ArthroCare Corporation, which used coblation technology, developed by himself and Philip Eggers, to facilitate arthroscopic joint surgery. Thapliyal served as the company's initial president and chief executive officer.

Hira V. Thapliyal, Ph.D. is currently the President & CEO of VytronUS, Inc. VytronUS is developing products in cardiovascular field. Hira is currently a member of the advisory board of the Department of BioEngineering, University of California, Berkeley.
