William F. Meehan is a lecturer in strategic management at Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is also a Faculty Director of the Stanford Institute for Innovation in Developing Economies (SEED) as well as Director Emeritus of McKinsey & Company. His research and teaching focuses on general management, leadership, non-profits, social entrepreneurship, and philanthropy. His core discipline is strategy, but his interests range from the primacy of mission, governance and performance measurement, and evaluation. The types of nonprofits involved include universities and other educational institutions, performing arts organizations, social entrepreneurs, health care institutions, social services, NGO's, environmental organizations, and foundations. Mr. Meehan served in various leadership and executive roles at McKinsey & Company until he retired in December of 2008 after 30 years of service. While at McKinsey his focus was in working with chief executives and senior leaders in technology, private equity, retail, financial series, and media on topics of management strategy, organization, and leadership. His leaderships roles at the firm included member of the shareholders council, McKinsey's board, Chair of the Client Committee, and Chair of the McKinsey Investment Office. He was also Vice-Chair of the Directors Review Committee, Founder and Chair of the Private Equity and Venture Capital Practice; Chair of the West Coast Practice, and Managing Director of the San Francisco Office. Additionally, Mr. Meehan serves as Director of Juniper Newtworks, Big Switch, and Westward Leaning. He is also on the Board of Directors at United Way of the Bay Area, Philanthropic Research, Inc., California Business Roundtable, Fordham Preparatory School, and San Francisco Symphony. Mr. Meehan holds a B.A. from Columbia University and an M.B.A. from Stanford University.
