Basil Hantash

Basil received his B.S. in biology and minor in chemistry from the University of Illinois in 1993. His Howard Hughes research focused on the role of myoblast differentiation in human muscle grafting and rehabilitation. After college, he joined Abbott Labs where he helped develop and successfully launch a hepatitis screening assay. As a research associate at Molecular Geriatrics, his work led to the discovery and patenting of a novel therapeutic drug for Alzheimer's Disease that was eventually sold to Upjohn. Basil was a junior year AOA inductee and graduated as valedictorian of both his graduate and medical school class. He completed the medical-scientist training program in 2002, receiving his PhD in both pharmacology and physiology. His doctoral thesis work helped redefine the intricate signaling pathways that control cardiac electrophysiology. He recently completed dermatology residency at Stanford University while serving as a consultant and scientific advisor to a number of MedTechs and has several patents pending. As an Instructor in the Division of Plastic Surgery, his research is focused on reengineering skin using adult stem cells. He is also intimately involved in humanitarian relief work and serves on the PCRF medical advisory. In addition to publishing numerous scientific peer-reviewed articles, Basil's poetry writing has been included in numerous books and an audio compact disc.
