John Capek has been the Executive Vice President of Mechanical Devices at Abbott Labs since 2007. He is responsible for Abbott's Vascular, Diabetes Care, Vision Care and Animal Health businesses. Previously, Dr. Capek served as President of Bioabsorbable Vascular Solution Inc., a subsidary of Guidant, LLC. Guidant Corp. is known for playing a critical role in the Cardiovascular device indistry. Dr. Capek has served in various management roles including President of Guidant Vascular Intervention and Vice President and general manager of Bioabsorbable Vascular Solutions. He also served as vice president and general manager of Guidant Germany. He was also Vice President of Marketing for Cardiac Rhythm Management. Dr. Capek joined Eli Lilly and Company in 1987 as a New Product Technology Associate with Lilly’s Medical Devices and Diagnostic division. Dr. Capek's early involvement in Eli Lilly and Company as well as his positions at Guidant and later Abbot Laboratories Inc have made him a prominent figure in the medical device sector. Capek has a bachelor's degree in biomedical engineering, a master's degree in biomedical engineering, a master's degree in electrical engineering, a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering, and a master's degree in business administration from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
