Julio C. Palmaz, M.D., is the Chairman of the Board of Directors and Chief Scientist at Palmaz Scientific, a medical device and biotechnology company pioneering the use of nanotechnology to provide more reliable implantable prothetic devices. Dr. Palmaz is the inventor of the first commercially successful stent and has developed numerous other procedures and devices, including the stent graft. Millions of patients worldwide, including stent recipient Mother Teresa, have benefited from the inventions of Dr. Palmaz, some of which have been donated to the Smithsonian Institute. Dr. Palmaz also holds the Ashbel Smith Professorship as a tenured professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Palmaz is also known for founding Advanced Bio Prosthetic Surfaces (ABPS) in 1999, with Christopher Banas. ABPS was founded as a private research and development enterprise focused on providing advanced biomaterials for implantable medical devices. In 2008, Dr. Palmaz and others formed Palmaz Scientific to acquire intellectual property, equipment, and employees from Nitinol Development, a Johnson & Johnson/Cordis company that has licensed ABPS technology. His profession career began in 1974 at San Martin University Hospital in Argentina. By 1981, he was chief of special procedures at Martinez Veterans Administration Hospital. Dr. Palmaz's career at the University of Texas Health Center began in 1983 when he joined the university in the Department of Rediology as Chief of Angiography and Special Procedures until 1999. He also held the position of Stewart R. Reuter Distinguished Professor and chief of cardiovascular and interventional radiology Research until 2005. In 2003, the university awarded him the Presidential Distinguished Scholar Award. Dr. Palmaz has also won numerous awards including: 2007 gold medalist of the society of Interventional Radiology, 2006 inductee of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, a 2005 distinguished scientist of the American Heart Association, and a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering. He has also received awards such as "Master of Interventional Cardiology" From Argentina College of Cardiology and "Extraordinary Professor" of the National University of La Plata in Argentina. Dr. Palmaz has 17 issued patents and is the author of over 26 books or book chapters and has authored more than 75 peer-reviewed publications. He is Member of the Editorial Board for Circulation and is a Scientific Reviewer for several journals including the Journal of Vascular Surgery and the Journal of Vascular, Interventional Radiology. Dr. Palmaz received his M.D. in 1971 at the National University of La Plata, Argentina, with radiologic specialty training at the University of California at Davis, Martinez Veteran's Administration Medical Center.
