Onset VenturesStanford, CA 2005 Fogarty Fellow
Ken Martin received his B.A.Sc. degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto in 1989. As an R&D engineer at SciCan Ltd., he participated in the development of the Statim, a novel autoclave that dramatically shortened instrument sterilization times. In 1994 he received a M.S. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from Stanford. After graduation Ken worked at IDEO Product Development designing medical instruments for Bayer and Ventritex. In 1996 Ken joined Immersion, a human interface device company focused on haptics, or computer controlled force and tactile feedback. At Immersion, Ken led the development of a sophisticated 6DOF sinus surgery simulator, as well as one of the first high volume force feedback gaming controllers. In 1999, Ken was promoted to VP of Engineering with responsibility for a team of 30+ engineers developing products in the automotive, medical simulation and gaming markets. In 2002, Ken helped start Hansen Medical, a new venture focused on bringing robotics to the cath lab. Ken built and led a small team through two successful rounds of prototyping demonstrating concept feasibility and positioning Hansen for its series B round of financing. Ken is listed on 14 patents and a number of pending applications.
