Stephen N. Oesterle, M.D., joined the Medtronic, Inc. January 2002, after serving as Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard University Medical School and Director of Invasive Cardiology Services at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. In his new position as Senior Vice President for Medicine and Technology, Dr. Oesterle provides executive leadership for Medtronic scientific research, formation of technological strategies and continued development of strong cooperative relationships with the world's medical communities. A world-recognized clinician, teacher and innovator in the field of cardiac catheterization, Dr. Oesterle developed and directed interventional cardiology programs at Good Samaritan Hospital, Los Angeles from 1986 to 1991, at Georgetown University in 1991 to 1992, and at Stanford University from 1992 to 1998. While at Stanford, Dr. Oesterle established the University Medical Center's first endovascular device laboratory. Subsequently, he founded a similar medical device development laboratory at Massachusetts General Hospital where he and his colleagues sought unique, minimally invasive methods for treating coronary disease, valvular disease, rhythm disturbances and heart failure. Dr. Oesterle has been an advisor and consultant to medical device companies, financial institutions and Internet service providers. He has international experience in clinical research and has trained many physicians in interventional cardiology, traveling widely to teach and demonstrate modern techniques in Europe and Asia. A scholarship fund he developed for Stanford and Massachusetts General Hospital is dedicated toward the training of cardiologists from less-developed countries. He has made more than 200 invited presentations to regional, national, or international medical symposia and workshops. Dr. Oesterle graduated summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1973 and went on the receive his M.D from Yale University School of Medicine in 1977. He also completed his residency at Massachusetts General Hospital and a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Stanford University.
