Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals Fellowship (CBYX)

Overview
The Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange for Young Professionals (CBYX) is a full-year fellowship to live, study and work in Germany funded by the United States Congress and the German Bundestag through a grant provided by the US Department of State, Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. It is administered by Cultural Vistas in the U.S.
CBYX is designed to give Americans an in-depth understanding of Germany through full cultural and linguistic immersion. CBYX is open to applicants in all career fields, though preference is given to students in STEM fields, agriculture, business and vocational fields. Students traditionally underrepresented in study abroad opportunities are especially encouraged to apply.
The Award
The CBYX program annually provides 75 participants with:
- 2 months of intensive language training in Germany
- 1 semester of study at a German university of university applied sciences
- 5-month internship with a German company in the participant’s career field
- Homestays with German host families, in shared apartments and student dorms
- Transatlantic airfare, health insurance and monthly living expense stipends
- Local in-country support throughout the program
- Prior German language knowledge is not required, though it is preferred.
The program is divided in several phases:
- Intensive Language Training Phase
- Study Phase
- Internship Phase
Eligibility
Candidates for CBYX for Young Professionals must meet the following requirements:
- Be U.S. citizens or Permanent residents
- Be between 18 and 24 years of age at the start of the program
- Possess a high school diploma or equivalent
- Exhibit clear career goals and some relevant experience in their career field (experience can be work, internship, or volunteer)
- Have a strong interest in German and international affairs, as well as a strong sense of American identity
- Be flexible, independent, and diplomatic
- Previous recipients of Congress-Bundestag scholarships are not eligible for this program.
